Montgomery, Ala. - Hendrix rebounded from their 40-14 opening day defeat to Maryville to pick up a road win over Huntingdon at Samford Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Auvic White had a career day on the ground, netting a career-high 137 yards on 29 carries, while
Jacob Buniff tossed three touchdown passes in the winning effort.
The Warriors took the lead on their opening drive with a 23-yard
Zylan Brown touchdown reception.
Clay Brandenburg's 32-yard field goal at the 8:10 mark put Hendrix up 10-0.
Jared Roberson's pick-six early in the second quarter increased that lead to 17 before Buniff found
Westin Bruce from four yards out to give the Warriors a 23-0 lead.
Huntingdon ended the first half with back-to-back touchdowns to make it a two-score game, and then brought that lead down to two with another touchdown late in the third quarter.
Hendrix finally got back on the board early in the fourth quarter as Buniff connected with
Amare Foreman on a 54-yard catch-and-run to bring the lead back up to nine. With 6:50 left to play, the Hawks found the endzone again to make it a one-score game. After Hendrix failed to score on the ensuing possession,
Joshua Gil pinned Huntingdon on their own 1-yard line, and
Zach Schultz's defense forced a three-and-out to give the Warriors the ball back with a chance to ice the game. Facing 2nd-and-8 on Huntingdon's 39 with 1:52 remaining, White broke loose on a nine-yard scamper to put the game to bed.
Buniff finished the day 17-of-33 for 222 yards. Bruce led all receivers with 6 receptions for 86 yards and a score.
In total, the Warriors picked up 16 first downs to Huntingdon's 15 and held the Hawks to just 273 total yards. The Hendrix defense excelled in getting off the field on third down, limiting Huntingdon to just one third-down conversion on eleven attempts.
Hendrix now returns home for three consecutive home games. They will host former SAA rivals Millsaps next Saturday for a 1:00 PM kickoff at Young-Wise Memorial Stadium.
