Conway, Ark. - Hendrix led for most of the night against one of the top teams in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference but were unable to see the game out as Colorado College escaped Grove Gymnasium with a 61-58 win on Friday night.
The lead changed hands eight times over the forty minutes with both teams trading blows in all four quarters.
The Tigers gained the early momentum with an 8-4 start and used proficient shooting from behind the arc to keep Hendrix at bay after the Warriors tied it up at 8-8.
Riley Brady's layup with 1:21 left in the opening period made it a 16-14 game, and
Carter Crane 1-for-2 from the line with under thirty seconds to go made it a one-point game going into the second quarter.
Hendrix opened the second quarter with a
Natalie Edmonson three-ball for their first lead of the contest, with
Brailey Forst making it a four-point game not long after. Two
Chloey-Rei Brown foul shots made it 25-20 midway through the quarter, and Edmonson was good again from deep to give Hendrix its largest lead of the night with the score at 28-20. The Tigers roared back to cut the lead to three with one minute left, but
Bella Cates long-ball with 00:04 left on the clock ensured that the Warriors would take a six-point lead into halftime.
Colorado College tied the contest at 39-39 midway through the third period and took their first lead since the opening minute of the second quarter with 2:06 left in the third on a triple to make it 42-41. Two
Riley Brady free throws made it a 44-43 game in favor of the visitors heading into the final quarter.
The Tigers owned the opening stages of the final period, benefiting from multiple Hendrix turnovers to take a 12-point lead with 4:38 to play. But just as CC dominated the first half of the final quarter, Hendrix dominated the closing stages and responded to the Tigers' run with a 9-0 scoring run to make it a one-score game with 1:34 in the fourth quarter, with back-to-back triples from
Izzy Fernandez highlighting the scoring spree. Colorado College could only convert on one of their four foul shots down the stretch, giving Hendrix a chance to tie the game at the buzzer, but the hosts were unable to convert on their final possession.
The Warriors out-rebounded Colorado College 40-29 in one of the only statistical categories in which either side distinguished themselves. Where the game was ultimately lost was turnovers, with Hendrix committing 25 turnovers to just 16 from the Tigers. A majority of those turnovers came in the third quarter, which allowed Colorado to race out to a double-digit lead in the final period.
Riley Brady finished the game with 19 points and 17 rebounds. The junior leads the SCAC overwhelmingly in rebounds and rebounds per game and currently ranks second nationally in all of NCAA Divsion III in rebounding. Edmonson joined Brady in double-figures with 10 points.
Hendrix (7-6, 3-2 SCAC) will look to shake off the tough loss on Sunday afternoon as they host St. Thomas for a 2:00 PM tip-off at Grove Gymnasium.
