BSB | Hendrix Drops Extra-Inning Shootout with Lyon

CONWAY - It took extra-innings to separate Hendrix and Lyon on Wednesday afternoon at Warrior Baseball Field, with the Warriors eventually dropping the contest to their in-state foes.

There were 36 combined hits between the two sides across the 11 innings, with both teams taking advantage of three fielding errors by the opposition.

Lyon struck first in the visitor first, taking advantage of a lead-off double to go up 1-0. But Hendrix responded immediately in the home half of the inning. Zane Nolan led off with a bloop double to set the table for Austin Rabago, who smoked his seventh home run of the year down the right field line to give Hendrix the lead. Shaun Pope then reached first on a bunt single before being doubled in by Ryne Dodson to put the Warriors up 3-1 heading into the second.

The Scots put a dent in the deficit with an RBI two-out double, but Rabago recorded his third and fourth RBIs of the game in the next half inning with single to right center to score Bryson Claiborne and Zane Nolan. Rabago was brought around after Dodson put the ball in play in the infield, and Pope scored the seventh run for Hendrix on a wild pitch.

A one-out solo shot from Dodson in the fourth gave Hendrix a comfortable 8-2 advantage, but the winds shifted beginning in the fifth with the Lyon bats waking up. The Scots scratched six runs across in that inning to tie the game at 8-8, and a two-out double in the sixth gave Lyon their first lead of the game since the first inning. The Scots doubled their lead in the seventh, but Hendrix responded with a two-spot courtesy of RBIs from Rabago and Dodson. Two more runs came across in the eighth for the Scots, and the visitors put Hendrix down 1-2-3 in the home eighth before scoring one more to take a 13-10 lead into the final inning.

Rabago reached scoring position with a one-out triple before Pope scored the two of them with Hendrix's third long ball of the day to cut the lead to one. Nick Echaniz ran for Ryan Lang after the latter worked a walk, and Echaniz then stole second to put the tying run in scoring position. Jacob Moody then extended the game with a game-tying double to right center to score Echaniz. The winning run reached third on a wild pitch, but Lyon was able to retire the side and leave the winning run stranded.

Both teams went scoreless in the tenth, with Hendrix once again leaving the winning run stranded in scoring position. Lyon found the breakthrough in the visitor eleventh with a two-out single, and the Warriors were unable to score the tying run in the home half of the inning.

Pope led the Warriors at the plate with a 4-for-5 day with three runs scored. Rabago went 3-for-6 with five RBIs and three runs scored.

Hendrix (18-12, 13-8 SCAC) will now shift its focus to a big three-game set against the league-leading Texas Lutheran Bulldogs at home. The series will start on Friday with a doubleheader at 3:00 PM.
