Johnny Burnett is a coaching veteran of 46 years. He was hired in June of 2012 to help head coach Buck Buchanan resurrect the Hendrix College football program.

Burnett helped the Warriors to a 7-3 record in 2016. The Warriors garnered their first national ranking, making it as high as #22 in the D3football.com Top 25 Poll.

In 2015, Burnett helped lead the Warriors to a Southern Athletic Association championship with an 8-3 overall record and a trip to the NCAA Division III Playoffs.

In 2014, the Warriors improved to a 6-4 record in just their second year since bringing back the program. In the Warriors' first season in 53 years, Burnett helped the team to a 3-7 record.

In fourth seasons, Burnett has coached an All-SAA First Team selection, one Second Team pick and three Honorable Mentions.
 
Burnett has coached at all levels of college football including three seasons at Cal Poly as secondary coach (2006-08), four seasons as Defensive Coordinator at Virginia Military Institute (2002-05) and three seasons as Assistant Head Coach / Defensive Coordinator / Recruiting Coordinator at Austin College (1999-2001). 

Burnett also coached at Oklahoma State University for three seasons (1996-98) where he served as the Cowboys' co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach. Before moving to Stillwater, he spent the majority of his career at United States Military Academy (Army), where he coached outside linebackers and secondary for 17 years. 

Burnett has also served as an assistant at Highland Junior College in Kansas (2011), Massanutten Military Academy in Virginia (2009-10), Utah (1970-71 and 75-76), Shippensburg State College (1972-74), Air Force Academy (1977) and Pacific (1978).
 
A Texan by birth, Burnett moved to California where he is a graduate of Mt. Eden High School in Hayward. He is also a graduate of UC Santa Barbra 1970 where he was a standout defensive back and baseball player. He received his Master’s Degree from Utah in 1972. 

Burnett has been married to Barbra Jo Mann for 42 years and they have two sons - J.D. and Kyle. 

Burnett serves as Assistant Head Coach as well as coach the secondary for the Warriors.
