Doug Mello enters his sixth year at the helm of the Hendrix College men’s soccer team. Mello ignited a new era of Hendrix soccer in 2008 as the Warriors have improved in leaps and bounds since his arrival.
In his first year with the Warriors, Mello led the team to a 5-12 record, and then an outstanding 9-8-2 record in his second season. The Warriors made a big jump from last in the 2007 SCAC standings to 5th place in the 2009 SCAC standings. In 2010, the Warriors went 8-8-1. In 2012, the Warriors won a school-record 10 games and recorded another program-best eight shutouts, going 10-6-3 on the season.
While at Hendrix, Mello has coached 14 players to all-conference honors and his teams have earned NSCAA/Adidas All-Academic Team honors all five of his years at the helm.
Entering the season, Mello has coached more games than any person in collegiate history with 1,141. In 36 years, he has a combined men's and women's record of 707-379-55 for a winning percentage of .644. Mello's 425 men's victories ranks 25th all-time in all divisions of NCAA and 10th among Division III coaches. His 282 women's wins is 29th in all divisions and 13th in Division III.
In 2013, Mello received NSCAAÂ Letter of Commendation for winning his 700th career game. Mello is the only coach to reach 350 men's and 250 women's victories milestone.
Mello joined the Warriors after serving as the head men’s and women’s soccer coach for 18 years at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. He also served as the Events Coordinator and Physical Education Instructor at Luther.
During his time with the Norse, his men’s team won six Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) titles, made five NCAA Division III National Tournament appearances (Elite Eight - 1995, 2001) and tallied a 240-119-13 overall record.
His women’s team won three IIAC Championships and accumulated a 219-120-26 overall record.
Mello currently holds the NCAA Division III record for most consecutive conference wins with 42.
Mello enters the 2012 season with a 425-240-43 overall record during his 33-year career as a men’s head coach.
His previous college coaching experience also includes a six-year stint at Siena Heights University (1982-88), a four-year tenure at Aquinas College (1978-82) and one year at College of the Southwest (1989).
Mello earned his master’s in Counseling from Siena Heights University in 1985 and completed his undergraduate studies from Aquinas College in 1978.
Mello resides in Conway with his wife Gina, son D.J. and daughter Marissa.
