Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Warriors Fall Late against Sewanee

CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College field hockey team suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat at the hands of Southern Athletic Association foe Sewanee - The University of the South on Saturday morning at Warrior Field. The Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead, but Sewanee scored three second half goals to earn the come-from-behind win.

Gabryele Pochron made several huge saves, finishing with 14 saves on the day, but took the loss in net. Bridget Umble made a pair of defensive saves for the Warriors as well. Gabrielle Fignar started in goal for the Tigers, allowing two goals and making two saves. At halftime, Sewanee chose to go with Katya Waters, who earned the win by making four saves in the second frame.

Brooke Whitaker keyed the Hendrix offense in the first half, making several plays on the flank to put the Warriors ahead. The freshman scored her second goal of the season in the 17th minute off of a drive from Lotte Kraaijenbrink. The senior ripped a pass from outside the arc to the goal mouth, where Whitaker redirected the ball past the Tigers' goaltender to put Hendrix ahead 1-0.

Later in the first, Whitaker contributed again, this time with an assist. Vanessa Jasso beat a Sewanee defender along the left flank and found Whitaker near the end line inside of the arc. The freshman knocked a centering pass in to Raychl Reger waiting in front of the goal to finish off the play, giving the Warriors a 2-0 advantage just before halftime.

In the second half, the Tigers came battling back. In the 49th minute, Katie Wilson found the back of the net off an assist from Allegra Massey-Elim to cut the Warriors' lead to 2-1.

In the final ten minutes, Hendrix attempted to extend their lead, but were denied by Waters. Debbie Crawford served up a perfect penalty corner that Erika Jasso set up for Morgan Fires. Fires ripped a screamer from the top of the arc, but Waters turned it away, sending the rebound all the way to half-field with the kick save.

With 6:49 remaining in the game, Sewanee found a way to tie the game. Carrie Anderson found Sarah Barry for the score that tied the game with just under seven minutes left.

In the final two minutes of the game, the Tigers scored the game-winning goal. After a Tigers' penalty corner, Gabryele Pochron made a pair of sprawling saves, but was beat on Sewanee's third effort as the visitors took a 3-2 lead with 1:55 remaining.

Hendrix attempted to draw even in the final moments but could not find the net, falling 3-2 to Sewanee. The Tigers are now 5-6 on the season with a 3-3 record in conference play.

The Warriors now hold a 2-9 overall record with a 1-4 mark in the SAA. Hendrix will return to action on Monday, October 13 when they host Roanoke College in a non-conference matchup.
