CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College field hockey team fell just short of a victory on Monday night at Warrior Field, losing 3-2 to Roanoke College in a non-conference tilt.
Lotte Kraaijenbrink opened the scoring in the seventh minute of play, giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead. The Hendrix captain one-timed a loose ball rebound past the Maroons keeper, hammering it off the base board for the goal.
Hendrix held the lead for most of the first half, until Shelbi Holloman tied the game for Roanoke. The Maroons leading scorer notched her first goal of the game on an assist from Caroline Peterson, tying the score at 1-1 in the 28th minute.
The Warriors jumped out to a one-goal lead again in the second half when
Brooke Whitaker put home her third goal in four games. The freshman was waiting on the far post for the ball to pop off the goalie's pads and pounced on the opportunity when the rebound came her way. The goal put the home team ahead 2-1 in the 37th minute of play.
Just under two minutes later, Roanoke struck again to tie the game. The Maroons dialed up a set play off of a penalty corner to give Holloman another chance to score. The forward buried the shot to tie the game early in the second half.
The Warriors had several opportunities to take the lead, outshooting the Maroons 6-5 in the second half, but couldn't find the net. Roanoke scored the eventual game-winning goal with just over ten minutes left. On a two-on-one breakaway, Katerina DeSimone fed Kelsey Palmisano in front of the net to put the visitors ahead 3-2.
Gabryele Pochron made five saves for the Warriors, but took the loss between the pipes. Candice Fisher made 10 saves for the Maroons, earning the win in goal.
Hendrix moves to 2-10 on the season and will return to action on Friday, October 17 when the team travels to Granville, Ohio to take on Ohio Wesleyan University in a neutral game hosted by Denison University. The Warriors will take on Denison on October 18 as well.
