JACKSON, Miss. - The Hendrix College men's soccer team went into halftime with a 1-0 lead, but surrendered three second-half goals as Millsaps earned a 3-1 win over the Warriors on Saturday.
The game was a chippy, physical affair that included 32 fouls, nine yellow cards, and a pair of red cards. Nathan Myers finished the game with five saves, but took the loss in net. Johnathan Huebbe made one save and allowed one goal for Millsaps in the win.
The Warriors benefitted from a Millsaps miscue in the first half, going ahead 1-0 on an own goal.
Wessel Westerhof crossed a ball into the mixer in the 39th minute that bounced off of a Majors' defender and into the goal to put Hendrix ahead in the first half.
After the halftime break, Millsaps applied serious pressure, outshooting the Warriors 13-3. The Warriors averted the Millsaps threat until the 75th minute when the Majors were awarded a penalty kick. Lukas Elmhammar stepped up to the 12-yard mark and slipped the ball past Myers to tie the game at 1-1. Just five minutes later, the Majors gained their first lead of the game on a goal by Jan Bergk. The Warriors trailed 2-1 with just over 10 minutes remaining.
In the final moments, Hendrix pressed forward, searching for the equalizing goal. In their efforts to get men forward, the Warriors were stung by a Millsaps counter-attack in the 86th minute. Chris Lawrence put away a goal with 4:25 remaining that sealed th evictory for the Majors.
Hendrix moves to 2-9-1 on the season with an 0-2-0 mark in the SAA. The squad will return to action on Tuesday, October 14 when they travel to Shreveport, La. to take on Centenary in a non-conference tilt.
