ATLANTA, Ga. - The Hendrix College volleyball team dropped their first set, but came back to beat Southern Athletic Association foe Oglethorpe for a 3-1 victory on Saturday to remain atop the conference standings.
MC Rogers finished with her sixth double-double in conference play this season, earning 11 kills and 10 digs, while freshman
Bradi Ryan chipped in with nine kills. Fiirst-year middle hitter
Sara Dyslin played a large part in the Warriors' comeback. The freshman had 11 kills, eight digs, and a career-high 10 blocks. Her 10 blocks mark the most by any Hendrix player since joining the SAA in 2012.
Allison Gaia and
Holyn Duyck combined to dish out 40 assists while
Felicia Beeman led the squad with 18 digs. As a team, the Warriors combined for a .270 hitting percentage, including a .675 hitting percentage in the fourth and final set.
In the first set, the Warriors seemed to come out sluggish after their huge victory against conference rival Berry on Friday. The squad fell 27-25 to the Stormy Petrels in the first set and hit just .111 as a team. Oglethorpe earned 12 kills to the Warriors' 10 in the first set to edge them, taking a 1-0 lead.
Hendrix seemed to take the loss of the first set personally, and improved their hitting percentage to .321 in the second set. The Warriors earned 11 kills while making just two attacking errors to take the second frame 25-14 to tie the match at 1-1.
In the third, the Warriors weathered a valiant attempt at the lead by the Stormy Petrels. Oglethorpe jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the third set but the Warriors came roaring back to take the lead. The Warriors regained the lead later in the set and extended their advantage to 16-9 on a series of serves from
Jill Sikes, including a pair of aces. Hendrix went on to take the third set 25-19 to earn a 2-1 lead going into the fourth.
Hendrix took a 2-1 lead into the fourth set and slammed the door on the Stormy Petrels, beating down the home team 25-5 to seal the victory. The lopsided fourth-set victory tied the Warriors least amount of points allowed in a set this season. Hendrix beat Rust 25-5 earlier this year.Â
With the victory, the team improves their program-record season, improving their mark to 23-4 with a 10-2 conference record. The squad will return to action on October 25th when they host Sewanee in another SAA match.Â
