MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Hendrix College men's soccer team fell just short of victory on Friday afternoon, taking a 1-0 loss to Southern Athletic Association foe Berry College in Mount Berry, Ga.
The Warriors defense held strong against a relentless Berry attack but were beaten on just one play that ended up being the difference. The Vikings outshot Hendrix 19-9 and earned 11 corner kicks to the Warriors' one. The Hendrix back line prevented nearly every chance for the Vikings to score but was beaten on a set play for the only goal of the match.
Nathan Myers finished with nine saves for the Warriors, the second highest total of his college career, but took the loss in net. Jon Nelson made six saves in the shutout win for Berry.
In the first half, both teams played evenly, with Hendrix mustering five shots and allowing six. Myers turned away all three first-half attempts that Berry put on goal as the two teams went into halftime scoreless.
Early in the second frame, Berry earned a corner kick and used the opportunity to get on the scoreboard. In the 53rd minute, Alex Rotoloni found Bobby Grunow for the header goal putting the home team ahead 1-0.
About midway through the second half, Hendrix had two great opportunities to tie the game, but both were stopped by Nelson.
Ryan Stanowski ripped a heater that Nelson parried and two minutes later, senior
Greg Gandy put a header on net that Nelson turned away as well, leaving the Warriors trailing 1-0.
Hendrix falls to 3-12-1 on the season with an 0-5-0 record in the SAA. The squad will return to action on Sunday, October 26 when they travel to Oglethorpe in search of their first conference win of the season.
