ATLANTA, Ga. - The Hendrix College men's soccer team was held up by Southern Athletic Association foe Oglethorpe University on Sunday afternoon, falling 3-0 to the Stormy Petrels.
Nathan Myers made two saves in net for the Warriors, but took the loss. Vaughn Moore earned a shutout in net for the Stormy Petrels and grabbed the win by making a pair of saves.Â
Hendrix may have had their best opportunity to score on their first opportunity of the game. Junior forward
Jacob Pierce ripped a shot on goal just 1:36 into the game, but was denied by Vaughn Moore to prevent the Warriors from scoring. Later in the half,
Wessel Westerhof had another potential goal-scoring opportunity in the 37th minute, but again Moore was up to the task of making the save. Hendrix and Oglethorpe entered the half in a scoreless draw.
In the second half, the Warriors were whistled for a foul inside the goal box and Oglethorpe was awarded a penalty kick. Martijn Edelman stepped up to the 12-yard marker and beat Myers to put the Stormy Petrels ahead 1-0 in the 54th minute.
The Warriors pressed forward for the equalizer, but their offensive pressure left them vulnerable on defense. The home team exploited the Warriors' offensive mindset for a pair of goals in the 68th and 84th minutes to extend their lead to 3-0.
Hendrix falls to 3-13-1 on the season with an 0-6-0 mark in the SAA. The squad will return to action on Saturday, November 1 when they travel to Birmingham-Southern for their final regular season match.
