Warriors Shut out Pioneers

CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College field hockey team earned their first conference victory of the season, downing Southern Athletic Association foe Transylvania University 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field. Gabryele Pochron earned the first shutout of her career in goal and three different Warriors scored as the home team cruised to their second win of the season.

Pochron earned the shutout win in net by making 11 saves on the day. Sara Aschbacher was the goalie of record for the Pioneers, taking the loss despite 19 saves in 62 minutes. Katie Jackel played the last eight minutes in net and turned away one shot.

Madi Reese began the season on the defensive line for the Warriors, but has since been moved into the midfield. Today the tactical change paid off for the Warriors as Reese netted the eventual game-winning goal in the 14th minute of play. The freshman gathered a loose ball and slipped it into the back of the net to give the Warriors an early 1-0 advantage. Hendrix outshot Transylvania 20-5 in the first half and earned nine penalty corners while limiting the Pioneers to just one, but could only muster the one goal in the frame.

In the second half, the Warriors quickly added onto their lead. In the 38th minute, Lotte Kraaijenbrink sent a long pass into the arc to Raychl Reger. Reger collected the pass spun to her backhand side and ripped the ball past Aschbacher to give the Orange and Black a two-goal lead.

In the final minutes, Transylvania pushed forward sending extra attackers from their back line to the Hendrix zone. The Warriors relieved the threat by clearing the ball and created a volatile counter-attack. Erika Jasso streaked down the left flank and crossed the ball to the back post where freshman Brooke Whitaker was waiting to put home an important insurance goal that lifted the Warriors' advantage to 3-0.

The game marked several career firsts for the Warriors. Gabryele Pochron earned her first career shutout, blanking Transylvania with 11 saves in net, Reese earned her first career game-winning goal while Whitaker tallied her first career score.

Hendrix improves to 2-7 on the year and moves to 1-2 in SAA play. They will return to action on Sunday, October 5 when they host Centre College at 11 a.m. in another SAA contest.
