Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Warriors Edged by Centre, 2-1

CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College field hockey team placed a large scare in the defending Southern Athletic Association champions Centre College, but came up just short in their upset bid. The Warriors fell 2-1 to the Colonels on a late second half goal.

Gabryele Pochron made 14 saves to keep the Warriors within striking distance, but took the loss in net. Kirby Roberts made three saves for the Colonels in the win.

In the first half, Centre jumped on top of the Warriors with a goal in the 11th minute. Julie Gates batted home a rebound off of a penalty corner to put the visiting team ahead 1-0 in the early going. Hendrix was outshot 13-3 in the first half, but managed to limit the Colonels to just the one goal in the frame thanks to a stout defensive effort led by Pochron, Lauren Shklanko, and Bridget Umble.

In the second half, the Warriors continued to battle and found themselves in position to score several times before the team was awarded a penalty stroke in the 41st minute. Raychl Reger stepped up to the hash, and lifted the ball past Roberts for the tying goal with just under 30 minutes to play in the game.

Hendrix nearly took the lead later in the half when Erika Jasso served a ball in across the crease. The Centre goaltender misjudged the cross and it skipped past her to the back post where Brooke Whitaker just missed the ball despite a diving effort.

Later in the game, Centre struck the eventual game winner. Kelsey Gordon inserted a penalty corner for the Colonels and slipped back into play on the near post. A shot came in from the top of the key that was sent away by Pochron, but Gordon was waiting on the doorstep to finish off the rebound with a goal. The score put the Colonels up 2-1 with 16:24 to play, and it stood as the game-winning score.

Hendrix falls to 2-8 on the season with a 1-3 mark in the SAA. The Warriors will return to action on Saturday, October 11 when they host Sewanee at 11 a.m. at Warrior Field
