CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College men's soccer team had ample opportunity to take a convincing lead in their game against Southern Athletic Association opponent Rhodes College on Sunday, but saw several attempts rattle off the posts and crossbar as they fell 1-0 to the Lynx.
Hendrix outshot Rhodes 21-12 over the course of the game, but were shutout by Lynx goalkeeper Riley Sheen, the Rhodes defense and the goal frame. Sheen earned the win making seven saves on the day while
Nathan Myers took the loss in net for the Warriors. Myers made three saves in the game.
In the first half, Hendrix seemed poised to score and had several opportunities, outshooting the Lynx 12-6 and gaining four corner kicks in the first half.
Jacob Pierce had several attempts go ringing off the woodwork and
Wessel Westerhof had one knock off the post as well. At the half, the score remained tied 0-0.
In the second period, the Warriors continued to pepper the visiting net with shots, but it was Rhodes who found the net. In the 56th minute, Connor Tipton received a ball from the back and played it forward to Samory Diaby. Diaby collected the ball, turned and fired a blind shot towards the goal. Myers was screened from the ball and reacted late as the shot found side-netting, putting the Lynx ahead 1-0.
In the final minutes, the Warriors pressed forward and nearly tied the game. In the closing ten seconds of the game, Hendrix built up an attack from the back.
Ryan Mason controlled the ball on the right flank and sent a brilliant cross to the back post.
Ryan Stanowski made a stellar run from midfield and came within inches of an equalizer, but could not reach the cross as the buzzer sounded.
With the loss, Hendrix falls to 2-8-1 on the season, and begins their SAA conference play at 0-1-0. The Warriors will return to action on Saturday, October 11 when they travel to Millsaps College to take on the Majors in another SAA tilt.
