Warriors Edged by SAA's Best

DANVILLE, Ky. - The Hendrix College field hockey team took on the top squad in the Southern Athletic Association on Saturday afternoon and fell just short of an upset bid, losing 2-0 to Centre College in Danville.

The Warriors played the Colonels tight for the second straight time this season, falling 2-1 earlier in the year to Centre. Raychl Reger netted the only Hendrix tally in that game, converting a penalty stroke in the second half.

In Saturday's game, Hendrix was unable to score despite a pair of quality chances from Reger. Gabryele Pochron made 18 saves on the day for the Warriors, and held the Colonels scoreless in the second half, but it wasn't enough to stop the Centre offense.

Kelsey Gordon put the Colonels ahead 1-0 on a goal just 55 seconds into the game. Gordon scored off of a Centre penalty corner to give the home team an early lead. Before the half, the Colonels added to their lead with a goal in the 30th minute. Julie Gates notched the tally late in the first frame to put the Colonels ahead 2-0 before the halftime break. Reger nearly cut into the lead before the half, beating the Centre goalie, but was denied by a Centre defensive save to keep the Warriors scoreless.

In the second half, Hendrix shutout the Centre offense, but couldn't muster a goal of their own. The Warriors had a pair of penalty corners in the second half, but were unable to generate a quality shot off either of them.

Hendrix moves to 2-14 on the season with a 1-6 mark in the SAA. The squad will take on Transylvania in their regular season finale on Sunday, November 2 in Lexington, Ky. The Warriors topped the Pioneers 3-0 in their last meeting.
