Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Warriors Clipped by Rust

CONWAY, Ark. - After winning their season opener, the Hendrix College women's basketball team fell in a tightly contested 68-64 loss to Rust College on Sunday afternoon in the Warrior Classic. Anna King scored 19 points to tie her career-high while Estrella Flores chipped in with 15 points, tying her career-high for the second straight game.

Flores went 3-for-5 from behind the arc to spark the Warriors offense off of the bench. King shot 8-for-12 from the floor, and pulled down six rebounds, controlling the paint on both ends of the court. Caitlin Kriesel-Bigler finished with just nine points after going off for 25 the night before. She finished with five assists as well.

Hendrix found themselves in an early hole after Rust began the game on a 10-0 run. The Lady Bearcats attacked the paint, earning layups on their first three offensive possessions as the Warriors struggled with their size and strength. Midway through the half, Rust had extended their lead to 24-12 as the Warriors continued to struggle on the offensive end, shooting just 4-for-17 in the first 10 minutes of the game.

Halfway through the first frame, the team seemed to turn things around, flipping the script on Rust. Hendrix shot 11-for-18 from the floor in the final 10 minutes of the first, going on a 30-9 run. The team went from trailing by 12 points to holding a nine point lead at the half. Anna King got the Warriors going, scoring 10 straight points to draw the team within four, Estrella Flores scored seven points and Katy Gallien chipped in with four points during the run to give the Warriors a 42-33 advantage at the half.

In the second half, Hendrix held the lead for the large majority of the frame, as the visiting Lady Bearcats chipped away at the Warriors' advantage. Down thre stretch, Rust looked to Suzette Suggs to keep the team afloat. The forward scored four straight points in the final four minutes to tie the game at 62-62 with 2:41 left. With 1:21 remaining Peyton Hurst put the team ahead with a free throw, giving the Warriors a 63-62 advantage.

On the next possession, a layup from Jawanda Buckley put the Lady Bearcats ahead 64-63 with 1:07 left in the game. After a timeout, Hendrix came out and ran a play to give Gallien a look for the go-ahead bucket, but the team couldn't convert. Kriesel-Bigler grabbed a huge offensive rebound and found Flores for a three-point attempt. Both chances were high-quality looks in the tense situation, but the Warriors just could not get the ball to drop. Rust converted their foul shots down thre stretch to pull away to a 68-64 victory.

Hendirx falls to 1-1 on the season and will return to action on Friday, November 21 when they host LeTourneau at 5:30 p.m.
