Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Warriors Surge Past LeTourneau

CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College men's basketball team survived to beat a scrappy LeTourneau University squad in a 75-67 victory on Friday evening at Grove Gym.

Hank Aldous led all scorers with a career-high 22 points while Alec Conard added 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting and grabbed a personal-best 13 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Gabe Gumm added a career-best 11 assists as the Warriors weathered a fast-paced defensive effort to earn their second victory of the season.

Roozario Wiggins led the YellowJackets with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Sam Talbert and Shaquille Reed each dropped 14. Reed aadded five assists and four steals for LeTourneau on the night as they nearly completed a comeback after falling behind by 18 points.

The Warriors fell behind early as the YellowJackets jumped out to a nine-point lead in the first five minutes behind fast starts from Wiggins and Giovanny Thompson. At the 13:55 mark, Hendrix trailed 13-4, but went on a huge 10-0 run spurred by Travis Garrett's outside shooting. The Warriors took a 14-13 lead on a layup by Conard midway through the first half and would never trail after that.

At that point, junior Hank Aldous took over. The 6-5 combo guard scored the next eight points for the Orange and Black, building them a seven-point lead. The home team rode a 30-12 run into the halftime break to earn a 34-25 advantage as they headed into the locker room.

In the second half, the Warriors jumped on the YellowJackets, exploiting their defensive miscues to score layup after layup in the paint. Alec Conard keyed a 16-7 run to open the half, giving the Warriors a 50-32 lead with 12:44 to go in the game.

The YellowJackets would not go down easy and provided quite a scare with a stifling full-court press that forced Hendrix into bad decisions and turnovers. LeTourneau went on a 27-12 run of their own to cut the Hendrix lead to just three points with 4:14 remaining. Point guard Gabe Gumm was able to right the ship for the Warriors, scoring five of his seven points in the final four minutes of play to keep Hendrix on top. The Warriors evaded the LeTourneau pressure and hung on for their second win of the season.

LeTourneau falls to 1-1 on the year and will take on Rhodes College in their next contest. Hendrix improves to 2-1 on the season and will return to action on Saturday, November 22 when they face UT Tyler in a non-conference battle.
