Warriors Edged by Rhodes 27-23

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Hendrix College football team looked poised to earn a crucial road victory over Southern Athletic Association rival Rhodes College, but were outscored 13-0 in the fourth quarter, falling to the Lynx 27-23 on Saturday afternoon in Memphis.

The Warriors outgained the Lynx, outpossessed the Lynx, and held the lead for the majority of the game, but a pair of special teams miscues led to the disaster for the Orange and Black as they suffered their second straight loss to a conference opponent.

Seth Peters threw for 311 yards an three touchdowns on 26-of-37 pass attempts. Memphis native Mike Goodrich was the lead rusher for the Warriors, galloping for 68 yards on 14 carries in front of several friends and family members. Dayton Winn ran for 54 yards on 14 carries as well. Ben Luedtke led all receivers with a season-high nine catches for 72 yards, while Casey Caton registered his second straight 100-yard receiving effort, catching four passes for 100 yards and a score.

On the defensive side, Thomas Eddlemon led the Warriors with 10 tackles and a sack. Harrison Newton added eight tackles, including a sack. Caleb Shannon chipped in with eight tackles as well.

The Warriors opened the game's scoring with a touchdown on their first offensive drive. The Hendrix defense forced a turnover on downs on Rhodes' opening drive and the offense capitalized on the mistake. Seth Peters finished off a seven play, 79-yard drive with a 23-yard touchdown strike to Ethan Hoppe, putting Hendrix ahead 7-0.

Rhodes tied the game later in the first quarter, scoring on a blocked punt. Joseph Raby got into the backfield to deflect Spencer Smith's punt and recovered it himself for the 25-yard touchdown return. The special teams score made it 7-7.

Steve Crenshaw added a 27-yard field goal in the second quarter to give Hendrix a 10-7 lead, but Rhodes answered with a trick-play score to regain the lead. Running back Roc Sherrill tossed a 24-yard touchdown pass to quarterback Blake Box to put the Lynx ahead 14-10.

Hendrix responded with their longest play of the game. After a pair of quality runs from Goodrich, Peters uncorked a 53-yard touchdown pass to Casey Caton, giving the Warriors a 17-14 lead heading into the halftime break.

In the second half, the Warriors came out and scored on their first drive, extending their lead to 23-14. A steady diet of rushes from Winn and Goodrich set up the pass for Peters who found Taylor Tibbits for the 11-yard score through the air. After a failed extra point, Hendrix led 23-14 over the Lynx.

In the fourth quarter, Rhodes cut the deficit to a one-possession game. The Lynx drove 60 yards on eight plays to make it 23-20 with 12:23 left in the game. The Warriors nearly drove home the dagger on the ensuing drive, but failed to convert a 4th-and-7 from the Rhodes 19, turning the ball over on downs with 4:38 left in the game. Rhodes got the ball back, but the Hendrix defense stood strong, forcing a turnover on downs with under two minutes left in the game.

Hendrix ran the ball, forcing the Lynx to use their timeouts to stop the clock before lining up to punt the ball away. For the second time on the day, Joseph Raby broke through the Hendrix line and swatted the punt. Alex Richards recovered the loose ball and returned it 19 yards for the go-ahead score, giving Rhodes a 27-23 lead with 1:04 remaining.

Hendrix had a chance at a game-winning touchdown, driving all the way down to the Rhodes 23-yard line. With three second remaining, Peters fired up a ball for Caton in the endzone, but the pass was broken up, giving the Lynx the 27-23 victory.

Rhodes improves to 7-2 on the year including a 4-1 mark in the SAA. Hendrix falls to 5-4 on the season with a 2-3 mark against conference opponents. The Warriors will return to action on Saturday, November 18 when they travel to Sewanee to take on the Tigers in their final regular season game of the year.
