CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College men's basketball team lost to East Texas Baptist University 74-67 at Grove Gymnasium on Wednesday afternoon.
The visiting Tigers (8-0) led for most of the first half and took a 37-31 lead into the break. ETBU outscored the Warriors (4-5) 20-11 to start the second period for a 57-42 advantage with 11:48 to play. Hendrix answered with a 9-0 run over the next two minutes, including five points from junior guard
John Ogle, to cut the deficit to 57-51.
The Tigers pushed the lead back out to 12 with 5:04 on the clock, but the Warriors had a 12-4 rally, capped by a
Hank Aldous fastbreak layup with 30 seconds left to make the game 71-67. Hendrix was forced to foul in the final seconds, allowing Ahnre Gray to hit one of two attempts with 22.5 seconds remaining. After a Hendrix turnover, Junior Mitchell sealed the game with a pair of free throws with 11 seconds left.
For the game, the Orange & Black shot 46 percent (23-of-50) from the field, 9-of-22 from three-point range and 12-of-18 at the line. The Tigers shot 43.6 percent (24-of-55) from the floor, 5-of-15 from three-point range and 21-of-27 at the free throw line. ETBU outrebounded Hendrix 36-29 and won the turnover battle 9-16.
Aldous, a junior guard from Dallas, led the Warriors with 18 points and six rebounds. Senior forward
Luke Vance scored 15 points to go with five boards and three assists. Sophomore point guard
Gabe Gumm tied his career-high with 11 points, hitting three outside shots, and dished out five assists. Sophomore guard
Travis Garrett also made a trio of three-pointers for nine points, a career best, and Ogle finished with seven points.
Gray paced the Tigers with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Mitchell finished with 11 points and Erby Thompson had eight points, four assists and five rebounds.
Hendrix will be return to action on Saturday when they host Champion Baptist College at 4 p.m.
