ATLANTA - The Hendrix College women's lacrosse team picked up the first win in program history by defeating Oglethorpe University 16-14 in Southern Athletic Association play on Friday night.
Freshman midfielder
Kate Davis tied the SAA record with eight goals in the game to lead the visiting Warriors (1-2, 1-0). Hendrix held a 33-25 shots advantage over the Stormy Petrels (0-2, 0-1), but both teams took 22 shots on goal.
Oglethorpe had a slight edge in ground balls (13-12) and draw controls (16-15), but committed more turnovers (17-15) and fouls (20-15).
A goal by senior attacker sandwiched by a pair from
Kate Davis gave the Warriors a 3-0 lead in the first 3:18 of the game. OU quickly tied it up in the next four minutes, then freshman defender
Gabryele Pochron scored on a free-position shot to regain a 4-3 lead for Hendrix. Juliana Altman tied the game at 4-4,
McKenzie Stribling's goal on an assist from
Meghan Ayers and another Davis score with 19:11 in the first half gave the Warriors the lead for good.
Junior midfielder
Landri Wenzel scored on a pass from
Amibeth Marks and Ayers made a free-position shot to give Hendrix an 8-5 lead at halftime. Davis opened the second period with two more free-position goals to put Hendrix in control 10-5. After an Altman goal, Davis scored and assisted Pochron's goal to go up 12-6 with 21:42 to play. The Stormy Petrels rattled off six goals with Stribling scoring once for the Warriors to make the game 13-12 with 7:19 left. Freshman midfielder
Raychl Reger netted a free-position goal and Davis scored twice more to put Hendrix back in control at 16-12 with 4:41 on the clock. OU managed two more goals before time expired.
Davis took 20 shots, 12 of which were on goal for eight goals and and assist. The Allen, Texas product also recorded eight draw controls. Stribling and Pochron scored twice and Ayers had a goal, an assist and a team-high three ground balls. Reger caused three turnovers and picked up two ground balls to go with her goal. Wenzel finished with a goal, two draw controls and a caused turnover. Freshman
Rebecca Alexander recorded four saves in 23 minutes in goal.
Dynica Greer also had four saves in 37 minutes.
Michelle Vasques led the Petrels with six goals, five ground balls, seven draw controls and three caused turnovers. Altman scored three times and had three draw controls and Carol Rubens scored twice and assisted another. Paige Falkowski recorded six saves in 48 minutes in goal.
Hendrix will take on Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Ga. on Sunday morning.
