Greg Gandy (5) and Spencer Taylor each scored for the Warriors as they earned their first victory of the season
Box Score CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College men's soccer team earned their first win of the year in result of a heroic effort, led by senior captain Greg Gandy. The midfielder buried the game-winning goal in the 80th minute to give the Warriors the 3-2 victory over Williams Baptist College on Wednesday evening.

Nathan Myers made his first collegiate start in goal for the Warriors. The freshman made six saves, allowing two goals, and earned the victory between the sticks for the home team. Williams Baptist goalkeeper Javier Piedra took the loss for the Eagles, making three saves in net.

In the first half, Hendrix outshot their opponents by an 8-4 margin, but it was Williams Baptist that found the net in the first frame. Matheus Assumpcao played a through ball from the midfield up to forward Matheus Allonso. The sophomore took a touch and buried the ball far post to put the Eagles ahead 1-0 in the 25th minute.

After halftime, the Warriors came out with a fire in their bellies and asserted themselves, quickly taking control of the tempo. The change of attitude paid off quickly as the Warriors scored back-to-back goals in the 55th and 59th minutes to take the lead.

The Warriors' first goal came from freshman forward Ricky Perez, who ran down a long pass on the left flank from Wessel Westerhoff, and netted it near post to tie the game. Just 3:53 later, Spencer Taylor gave Hendrix their first lead of the game. Off of a free kick, John McGrath leaped and won a header, sending it to the net. The Eagles' goalkeeper parried the ball away, but right to the feet of Taylor, who buried the ball in the back of the net to put Hendrix ahead 2-1 with 31:52 remaining in the game.

It only took Williams Baptist 28 seconds to draw back to even with the Warriors. The Eagles restarted play, sending the ball backwards. After a few short passes, the Eagles sent a long ball up from the back. The Hendrix defensive line won the first ball in the air, but the Eagles' Assumpcao came away with the ball on a breakaway. The freshman beat Myers to the far post to tie the game at 2-2 in the 59th minute of play.

With just over 10 minutes remaining in the game, the Warriors continued to pressure the Eagles' defense. Westerhoff beat a Williams Baptist defender down the right flank and gained the end line. The forward crossed the ball through the defense into the feet of Greg Gandy. The senior took a collecting touch and calmly finished the ball into the side netting, lifting the home team to a 3-2 lead in the 80th minute.

The Warriors were forced to withstand a flurry of opportunities in the final minutes, but Myers and the Hendrix defense kept the Eagles off the scoreboard for the final 10 minutes and helped earn Hendrix their first win of the season.

Hendrix improves to 1-3-1 on the season, including a 1-0-0 record at home, where they will play their next three matches. The Warriors return to action on Saturday, Sept. 13 when they host Fontbonne University in game two of the Warroir Classic. Emory University and Rhodes College will take part in game one.
