Box Score CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College men's soccer team fell 2-0 to University of the Ozarks on Wednesday night under the lights at Warrior Field.
Wessel Westerhof fired there shots on goal to lead the Warriors, as they outshot the Eagles 15-12, but failed to beat Ozarks goalkeeper Austin Benner. Benner finished with eight saves and earned his second shutout of the season.
Eric Bracy earned the starting nod for the Warriors, but took the loss in net.
The visiting Eagles got on the board quickly, scoring in the fourth minute of play. Thomas Mills played a through-ball up the field where Bryce Young ran it down and beat Bracy on a one-on-one breakaway to put Ozarks up 1-0 in the early going.
The Warrior defense played strong, despite allowing the early goal. On an Ozarks corner kick,
Eric Bracy punched away the initial cross, but the parried ball went directly to an Eagles' attacker who headed it goalwards. The ball beat Bracy to the far post, but
Billy Gardner was there to flick it over the crossbar to save the goal.
The Warriors mustered eight shots in the first half, but were turned away on every opportunity. The team's best chance in the opening frame came on one of their two first-half corners.
Ryan Stanowski served the ball into the mixer where
Greg Gandy barely missed connecting on a header. The loose ball was cleared by the Eagles' defense, ending the Warriors' offensive surge.
In the second half, Ozarks added to their lead on a set piece. Antonio Ramos played a ball from 35 yards out into the box where Young trapped the ball down to his teammate Shaun Keane. The Eagles midfielder one-timed the shot into the back of the net to put the Eagles ahead 2-0.
Hendrix applied pressure to the Ozarks back line in the final ten minutes, earning several opportunities, but were denied each chance to score.
Jakob Hull had the cleanest look in the final minutes, trapping the ball down off a cross, but his shot sailed just wide.
Hendrix falls to 2-5-1 on the season with the loss, but will return to action in search of their third win on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. when they travel to East Texas Baptist University to take on the Tigers.
