SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. - The Hendrix College women's tennis team opened their fall season with a 7-2 victory over NAIA opponent John Brown University on Saturday. The Warriors rode a sweep of the three doubles flights to the victory.
Lauren Mahaney,
Hannah Smashey, and
Sarah Walker were double-winners for Hendrix on the day.
Mahaney teamed with
Pratheepa Ravikumar at first doubles to dispatch the John Brown top doubles team 8-4. Smashey and
Erika Castro combined at second doubles to earn an 8-3 victory and Walker teamed with
Laela Zaidi to edge out the John Brown third doubles pair for a 9-8 (10-3) win.
In singles play, Mahaney, Smashey, and Walker each took their flights in straight sets. At sixth singles,
Brenda Quintero earned an exhilirating three-set victory over the Golden Eagles' Eva Berry. Quintero took the first set 7-6 in a 10-8 tiebreaker, but fell in the second set 6-4. The match was decided by a third-set super-tiebreaker, which Quintero took decisively 10-2.
Hendrix improves to 1-0 on the season and will return to action on Sept. 30 when they travel to Clarksville, Ark. to take on University of the Ozarks.
