CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College men's soccer team fell into an early hole and could not dig themselves out of it, falling 4-1 to LeTourneau University on Tuesday evening in Conway.
Jacob Pierce finished the game with three shots on goal and tallied the only score for the Warriors.
Nathan Myers made three saves in nearly 60 minutes of action in net, but took the loss between the sticks.
Jerry Thomeczek saw his first action of the year in net and made two saves in the final 32 minutes of play. LeTourneau's Joe Myers earned the win, making four saves and allowing just one goal.
The YellowJackets took an early advantage, capitalizing on Hendrix defensive miscues. Adam Schultz and Alan Flores each scored in the first ten minutes to put LeTourneau ahead 2-0 in the early going. The Warriors held the YellowJackets to very few chances for the rest of the half, but were unable to score through the frame.
In the second half, Schultz struck again for the visitors. Danny Canaviri played a lofted ball from the midfield, and Schultz beat the Hendrix defensive line to strike a half-volley that soared over the Warriors' goalkeeper and in for the score.Â
Hendrix attempted to mount a late comeback, and grabbed some momentum when Pierce put them on the board in the 72nd minute. A LeTourneau handball in the box allowed a Hendrix penalty kick. Pierce stepped up to the 12-yard mark and buried the kick to the keeper's left, making it 3-1 with just over 15 minutes remaining.
In the final moments as the Warriors pressed upfield, the YellowJackets mounted a counter-attack, taking advantage of the Warriors' forward position. Hunter Swift finished the break with a goal off of a rebound that put LeTourneau ahead 4-1 in the 80th minute.Â
With the loss, Hendrix falls to 2-7-1 on the season and will return to action on October 2 when they host Rhodes College in the first game of Southern Athletic Association play of the season.
