IRVING, Texas - The Hendrix College women's basketball team got off to a slow start to begin their season, but have heated up just in time for conference play. The Warriors earned their third straight road win on Monday night, beating the University of Dallas Lady Crusaders 63-57 in Irving.
Sara Dyslin led all scorers with 16 points on an impressive 7-for-8 shooting performance.
Anna King added 14 points and snagged a career-high 15 rebounds for the Warriors, all on the defensive end.
Katy Gallien nearly earned her first double-double of the season finishing with nine points and 11 rebounds to go along with six assists.
Brooke Hagemann scored 13 points for the Lady Crusaders, who got a huge lift from Lindsey Gendron and Michelle DeCoud off the bench. The pair of reserves combined for 26 points while DeCoud earned a double-double with 10 rebounds, including six on the offensive glass.Â
In the first half, the Warriors received scoring contributions from eight different players. King led the way with six first half points, while
Breann Forbes and
Cathy Waylan each went 2-for-2 off the bench, chipping in with four points apiece. Midway through the half the Orange and Black trailed 14-13, but the squad closed out the frame on an 15-4 run to take a 28-18 lead with 4:51 left in the half. Dallas battled back to cut the lead to four points at the halftime break.
In the second half, Hendrix jumped on the hosts, scoring nine straight points to begin the half.
Caitlin Kriesel-Bigler opened the frame with a three on the team's first offensive possession. The next three times down the court the Warriors pounded the ball into the post, generating layups for King and Dyslin to give the team a 13-point lead, their largest of the game.Â
As the half wore on, Dallas rallied to tie the contest at 53-53 with 5:44 remaining in the game. The Lady Crusaders had a chance to take the lead, but
Katy Gallien stepped in and drew a charge with 3:29 remaining that shifted the momentum back to the Warriors.
In the final minutes of the game, Hendrix leaned on their post players to drive the offense.
Anna King and
Sara Dyslin combined for all 10 Hendrix points in the last five minutes and played exceptional defense down the stretch to earn the 63-57 victory.Â
University of Dallas falls to 7-3 on the season with two of their three losses coming to Hendrix. The Orange and Black came away victorious in the two teams' previous meeting, earning the 75-66 win on Nov. 30.
The Warriors improve to 5-7 (0-1) on the season and are heating up at just the right time. Hendrix will carry their three-game winning streak into conference play when they travel to Georgia to take on Southern Athletic Association foe Berry College on Friday, Jan. 9 and Oglethorpe University on Sunday, Jan. 11.Â
