CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College baseball team split their first Southern Athletic Association double-header of the 2015 campaign with Sewanee - The University of the South at Warrior Field Saturday. The host Warriors (4-3, 1-1) won the first game 6-1, but the Tigers (3-1, 1-1) rebounded to take the nightcap 3-1.
In the opener, junior hurler
Will Nichol threw six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and two walks with five strikeouts, moving to 2-0 on the year. Junior
Brian Commerford allowed one run with one strikeout in two innings and sophomore
Brooks Billings threw a scoreless ninth. Sewanee starter Drew Mancuso allowed eight hits, three earned runs, three walks and struck one in fiving innings to take the loss.
In the bottom of the first, senior center fielder
Ryan Ritz led off with a single and freshman shortstop
Drew Judson walked. After a double steal, first baseman
Thomas Weber knocked them both in with a single to right center. The Warriors added two more runs in the fifth on a
Wyatt Hogan RBI-single and a
Harley Faye sacrifice fly.
Sewanee's only run came in the eighth when designated hitter drove in first baseman Brett Polston, who doubled, with a sac fly.
Two errors and three hits led to two more runs for the Orange & Black in the eighth.
In game two, the Tiger pitchers limited the Warriors to just four hits. Charles Warren (1-0) went six innings, allowing just three hits, a run, a walk and two strikeotus for the win. J.T. Hintzen struck out two in the seventh for the save. Junior starter
Daniel Imbro allowed seven hits, three runs and two walks with two strikeouts in four innings in the losing effort for Hendrix. Senior left-handed reliever
Cannon Schrank fanned a career-high four batters in three scoreless innings.
Sewanee picked up a run in the third when shortstop Tyler Minkkinen led off with a double and scored on a Dykes base hit. Minkkinen had a two-run double in the fourth inning.
With two outs in the sixth, Judson drew a walk, stole second and scored on a Weber single to center field.
Hendrix Notes- Weber went 5-for-8 on the day with three RBI. He extended his hitting streak to seven games dating back to last season.
- Judson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in game one. He stole a base in both games.
- Ritz had two hits and a pair of stolen bases in the opener.
- Sophomore third baseman
Spencer Summers also had two hits, including a double in the first game.
- Nichol picked up his 10th career win, moving him into a 10th place tie in program history.
Sewanee Notes- Catcher Ryan Poole led the Tigers with two doubles in the first game.
- Minkkinnen and Dykes each had two hits in the nightcap
