SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Hendrix College men's basketball team fought hard, but could not overcome the home team as the squad fell to Southern Athletic Association foe Sewanee - the University of the South 70-58.
Travis Garrett led the Warriors with 11 points off the bench and was the only Warrior in double-digits.
Luke Vance finished with nine points, while
Jordan Barrett,
Alec Conard, and
Aaron Steele each contributed with eight points. Vance also snagged 10 rebounds, while Conard grabbed eight off the glass and led the team with three blocks.
The Warriors kept pace with the Tigers for much of the first half, and even held a 15-14 lead with just over eight minutes to go in the first. Sewanee pulled away before halftime, riding a 19-9 break over the final eight minutes to take a 33-24 lead into the locker room at half.
The teams traded baskets for much of the second half, with Hendrix hanging around, not allowing the Tigers to push their lead to double-digits. With 6:18 remaining, five straight points from Garrett cut the deficit to just four points. Hendrix trailed 56-52, but it was as close as they would come to regaining the lead. Over the final five minutes of play, Hendrix went just 2-for-10 from the floor as the Tigers pulled away for the 70-58 victory.
The Warriors fall to 6-14 on the season with a 1-8 mark in the SAA.Â
Hendrix Notes- Tonight's game marks the second time Garrett has led the team in scoring. Six different Warriors have been the team's leading scorer this season.
- Hendrix outrebounded Sewanee 32-30, including 11 offensive rebounds.
- The Warriors went 19-of-52 from the floor, shooting just 36.5% on the night.
Sewanee Notes- Marcellus Caldwell led all scorers with 20 points in the game, while Jorden Williams finished with 18.
- Sewanee shot 22-for-43 from the floor, finishing the game with a 51.2% shooting clip.
- The Tigers committed just nine turnovers on the evening, and dished out just five assists.
