CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College baseball team took a tough 10-4 loss to NCAA Division II member Henderson State University on Wednesday night at Warrior Field. The Reddies are currently ranked 13th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association poll among Division II schools.
Thomas Weber tossed five innings for the Warriors, allowing two earned runs and struck out one.
Brian Commerford,
Baker Helton, and
Brian Epstein each made a relief appearance and
Connor Nelson made his season debut. Nelson threw 1.1 scoreless innings, with a walk and a strikeout.
Chance Schilhab got his first career hit for the Warriors, lacing a pinch-hit RBI-single into right field in his only at-bat of the night.
Jake Wiegand had a pair of hits and
Spencer Summers finished with two RBI to lead the Orange and Black offense.
Matt Simmons went 1-for-1 with two walks and a stolen base.
Henderson State began the game by putting up three runs in the first inning, but the Warriors responded with a score in the bottom of the frame. Summers drew a bases loaded walk with two outs to bring in
Drew Judson, making the score 3-1.Â
The Reddies added a run in the third, but the Warriors responded again, cutting the lead to 4-3 with a pair of runs. Wiegand and Judson began the inning with back-to-back singles. Two batters later,
Wyatt Hogan brought home a run with a single to left. Summers hit into a fielder's choice, earning an RBI to cut the deficit to just one run.
Henderson State scored in four consecutive innings to extend their lead to 10-3, highlighted by a three-run home run by Lance Fields. Trailing by seven runs in the ninth, Hendrix generated a rally with a patient approach at the plate. A single by
Ryan Ritz, a walk, and a hit batsman loaded the bases for Schilhab who stung a fastball the opposite way to bring home Ritz, making it 10-4. With the bases loaded and no outs, the Warriors missed out on any more runs, falling 10-4 to the Reddies.

Up NextHendrix moves to 4-8 on the season and will return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Danville, Ky. to resume conference play against SAA foe Centre College.
