DANVILLE, Ky. - The Hendrix College baseball team rode another stellar performance from pitcher
Will Nichol and clutch hitting from catcher
Seth Mobley to a 4-2 win over Southern Athletic Association rival Centre College on Saturday evening in Danville.
With two on and two out and the game locked at 2-2 in the top of the ninth, Mobley stepped up and ripped a two-run single to break the tie and give the Warriors a 4-2 cushion. The hit proved to be the difference as the Warriors knocked off the Colonels in the first of a three-game series over the weekend.
Nichol tossed seven strong innings, allowing two runs on six hits and fanning five, but took the no-decision.
Cannon Schrank earned the win, tossing a scoreless eighth inning to hold the score at 2-2, and
Harley Faye came in for the save, striking out a pair as he retired the Colonels in order to close the game.
Hendrix put up a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 2-0 lead.
Ryan Ritz led off with a single, and scored two batters later on a wild pitch.
Drew Judson reached on an error and came around to score on an RBI double off the bat of
Thomas Weber to give the Warriors a 2-0 advantage.
Centre responded in the bottom of the frame with two runs to tie the game, manufacturing the scores on two hits and a walk. With the score tied 2-2, Nichol made his most impressive escape in the bottom of the 7th. With runners on second and third, Nichol forced Centre's Grant Herald to fly out to right field to end the inning, preserving the tie.
In the top of the ninth,
Jake Wiegand began the rally with a one-out single. Two batters later,
Harley Faye drew a walk to set the stage for Mobley, who came through in the clutch to give the Warriors the lead and ultimately, the win.Â
Hendrix Notes- With the win, Schrank earned his first win out of the bullpen to improve to 2-1 on the season.Â

Harley Faye converted his second save of the year and is 2-for-2 in save opportunities.Â
- Weber finished 2-for-4 from the plate and was the only Warrior with a multi-hit game. He also swiped his fourth career stolen base.
- Nichol has now pitched 26.1 innings on the year, allowing just nine earned runs for a 1.37 ERA.
Centre Notes- Rob Caudill was one out away from a complete game, tossing 8.2 innings and allowing three runs (two earned) to take the loss.
- Six different Colonels recorded one hit each, all of them singles.
- The Colonels scored just two runs in the game. The squad has scored two or fewer runs in seven of their nine games.Â
Up NextHendrix and Centre will complete their three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday, with game one scheduled to start at 11 a.m. EST.
