CONWAY, Ark. - With 3:07 left in the third quarter, the Hendrix College men's lacrosse team trailed Southern Athletic Association rival Rhodes College 8-3. The squad battled all the way back to take a 10-9 lead in the fourth quarter, but ultimately fell 11-10 in overtime to their conference rival.
Christian Wheeler made a career-high 22 saves in net for the Warriors, including a game-saving stop with 1:02 left from point-blank range to force overtime.
Travis Rabun led the Hendrix attack with five points on two goals and three assists.
Alex Ortenstone netted a hat trick and added an assist, while
Carson Boone finished with two goals and a helper.
Graham Marcus finished with three ground balls and tied for the team-high with
Dan D'Ostuni with two caused turnovers apiece.
The Warriors got off to a slow start, spotting the Lynx a 4-0 lead in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Rabun and Ortenstone netted back-to-back goals to put the Warriors on the board and cut the Lynx's lead in half. Rhodes added a fifth goal with 6:47 left in the first half, taking a 5-2 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half, Rhodes gained their largest lead of the game, taking an 8-3 advantage with 3:07 remaining in the third quarter. In the final minute of the period,
Carson Boone got the ball rolling for the Warriors' offense. The forward scored his first of the game on a quick pass from
Patrick Rogers to cut the lead to 8-4 at the end of the third. In the fourth, the Orange and Black capitalized on the man-advantage, going 3-for-5 on man-up situations in the fourth quarter alone to spur their comeback.Â
Ortenstone netted two fourth-quarter goals, Boone, Rogers, and
Cody Eckes each scored one as part of a 6-1 run to tie the game at 9-9 with 6:54 remaining. The Warriors cashed in on their man-up offense once again with 4:35 left when Rabun found
TK Shaffer, who went five-hole on the Rhodes goalie to score the go-ahead goal, giving the Warriors a 10-9 lead. Rhodes battled back, tying the game with 1:48 to force the extra period.
In the overtime frame, Hendrix had an opportunity to score the game-winner, but two costly turnovers sunk the home team as Rhodes netted the game-winner to snatch the 11-10 victory away from the Warriors.

Christian Wheeler's 22 saves were the most in his career and rank fourth in program history in single-game saves.
- Hendrix went 4-for-9 on man-up opportunities, while holding Rhodes to just 1-for-5 with a man-advantage.

Robbie Borrello, the Warriors leading goal-scorer entering the game, was held scoreless for the first time in nearly a year (March 25, 2014).
- The Warriors are now 3-1 all-time against Rhodes, and 0-5 all-time in overtime games.

- Thomas Matthew made 11 saves in net for the Lynx and earned the win.
- Rhodes improves to 7-2 on the season, already matching their win total from the 2014 campaign (7-10).
