ATLANTA, Ga. - The Hendrix College baseball team earned a pair of statement wins on Saturday afternoon, beating #10 Emory College in both games of a doubleheader, 11-4 and 5-0.Â
The Warriors earn their second sweep of a top-10 team in as many seasons, taking all three games in last season's series against third-ranked Trinity (Texas). Hendrix had not played a ranked team yet this season.
Thomas Weber combined to go 4-for-8 on the day with a triple, two runs, and two RBI.
Ryan Ritz went 4-for-10 with a pair of RBI and a stolen base over the doubleheader. The Warriors got a pair of outstanding starting pitching performances from
Will Nichol and
Kyle Teachout. Nichol tossed seven strong innings, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits for the win. Teachout threw his first nine-inning complete game of the season, scattering six hits for his second career shutout.
Hendrix spotted Emory a pair of runs in the first game, allowing single runs in the first and third innings. The team got their offense going with three runs in the fourth.
Drew Judson and Weber started the inning with back-to-back singles, and both came around to score on a throwing error two batters later. Hendrix added another run on a wild pitch to take a 3-2 lead.
The Warriors piled on insurance runs, scoring single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. The team exploded for five more runs in the eighth to bolster their lead.
Matt Simmons ripped a two-run single and three more runs came around on Emory errors, giving the Warriors an 11-2 lead. Emory scored a pair in the ninth, but it wasn't enough to overcome the immense Hendrix lead as the Orange and Black took game one 11-4.
Game two was dominated by Teachout's performance on the mound. The junior worked his way through nine innings for his fourth career complete game. Teachout earned his second-career shutout and his second win of the season.
Hendrix didn't get on the board until the sixth inning, going ahead 1-0 on an RBI-single from Ritz. A
Jake Wiegand RBI single put the team up 2-0 in the seventh, but it was Weber who broke the game open in the eighth. The first baseman ripped a two-run triple to left-center, making it 4-0 to give Teachout ample breathing room. The Orange and Black added a run in the ninth on an RBI single from
James Martin to extend the lead to 5-0. Teachout shut down the Eagles in the ninth to earn the victory. Â
