ATLANTA, Ga. - The Hendrix College baseball team had their offense stifled on Saturday as they dropped both games of a doubleheader to Southern Athletic Association rival Oglethorpe University. The Warriors came up just short in game one 3-2, and fell 4-1 in game two.
In game one,
Matt Simmons and
Spencer Summers each went 2-for-4, while
Jake Wiegand and
Ryan Ritz each had one hit. Simmons and Wiegand each had an RBI while Ritz also registered his ninth stolen base of the season.
Will Nichol tossed six solid innings, striking out six. The pitcher allowed three runs, but all of them were unearned. Despite his effort, he took the loss on the mound.
Cannon Schrank tossed a pair of scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit and ringing up three.
Hendrix took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, when Simmons brought home Ritz with an RBI single. The Stormy Petrels regained the lead in the fourth, capitalizing on three Hendrix errors and turning them into three runs, taking a 3-1 lead.
In the sixth, Hendrix threatened to tie the game with a pair of hits from Simmons and
Wyatt Hogan. Simmons led off with a single followed by a double off Hogan's bat putting runners on second and third with no outs.
Jake Wiegand advanced both runners, bringing home Simmons with an RBI groundout to the right side, but Hogan was stranded at third with the next two Warriors recording outs to end the threat.
In the top of the ninth, Hendrix attempted to tie the game. Wiegand and Summers each singled to put two men on with no outs.
Harley Faye bunted the runners over and
Seth Mobley attempted to tie the game on a squeeze bunt. The Stormy Petrels cut down the runner at the plate to squash the Warriors' scoring threat as they earned the 3-2 victory.
In game two, the Hendrix offense was baffled as they recorded just two hits.
Kyle Teachout got the start for the Warriors, and began his outing with a tough inning. The pitcher was touched up for four runs in the first, but did not allow any in his next three innings of work.
Colten Poellinger entered in the fifth for two innings of scoreless relief, striking out three.Â
The Warriors' only run came in the top of the seventh. Hogan drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a groundout. The outfielder came around to score on the next play, thanks to an Oglethorpe error, making the score 4-1.Â
