JACKSON, Miss. - The Hendrix College baseball team let a pair of leads slip from their hands against conference rival Millsaps as the Majors stole a pair of wins, dropping the Warriors 2-1 and 3-1 in Saturday's doubleheader.
Ryan Ritz led the Warriors at the plate, going 3-for-6 with a walk and a stolen base. The senior scored both of the Hendrix runs on the day.
Thomas Weber extended his hitting streak to 10 games, dating back to last season with a double in the first game and a single in game two.
In game one,
Will Nichol tossed 7.1 innings, allowing one run on eight scattered hits. He struck out three but took the no-decision, leaving the game when it was tied 1-1 in the eighth. The Warriors' only run of the game came in the top of the first inning. Ritz led off with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and came around to score on a
Drew Judson single. The score put the team ahead 1-0, and the tilt stayed that way until the eighth inning.
The Majors led off the inning with a pair of singles, and tried to bunt their runners over, but the Warriors' defense got the lead runner at third for the first out of the inning. The next batter laced an RBI double down the left field line to tie the game.
Cannon Schrank worked out of the jam forcing a weak popout to right field and striking out the next batter.
With the game tied 1-1, Hendrix failed to generate a run in the top of the ninth. In the bottom of the inning, Millsaps led off with a walk. Two batters later, the Majors squeezed a seeing-eye single through the left side. The next batter lifted a line-drive single to left. There may have been a play at the plate, but the left-fielder could not come up with the ball cleanly to make an attempt, and the Majors walked off with a 2-1 win in game one.
In game two, the Warriors held another 1-0 lead, pushing across a run in the top of the fourth inning. Ritz led off with a single up the middle and was moved into scoring position by a
Jake Wiegand single. After Weber sacrificed the runners over, Ritz came in to score on an RBI groundout off the bat of
Matt Simmons, giving the Warriors a narrow advantage.
Kyle Teachout made his season debut for the Warriors on the mound, guiding the team through four scoreless innings. The Hendrix starter ran into trouble in the fifth, allowing back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Colton Poellinger came in to work out of the jam, but allowed an RBI single before forcing an inning-ending double play. The Warriors came away from the fifth tied at 1-1.
The Orange and Black went down in order in the top of the sixth, and Millsaps took advantage, generating two runs on three hits in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 lead. In the top of the seventh, the Warriors sparked a two-out rally, with
Harley Faye and
Spencer Summers each getting on with two outs, but the team couldn't tie the game, and ultimately fell 3-1 to the Majors.
