Warriors Fall in Overtime to Colonels

DANVILLE, Ky. - The Hendrix College men's basketball team lost to Centre College 77-74 in overtime in Southern Athletic Association competition at Alumni Gymnasium Sunday afternoon.

The host Colonels (10-4, 2-1) led most of the first half, but by no more than seven, and had a 32-28 lead at halftime. The Warriors (1-13, 0-3) kept the game close in the second half. Trailing 65-62 with 1:19 left, freshman point guard Preston Smith hit a three-pointer 11 seconds later to tie it up and force overtime.

Centre went up 72-68 with 36 seconds left in the extra frame, but junior guard Travis Garrett knocked down a three to make it 72-71 with 22 to play. CC's Matt Gump and Smith for Hendrix exchanged free throws to keep it a one-point game. Blake Scinta hit a pair of free throws with five seconds left to go back up by three. Smith was fouled with three seconds left and hit the first one. His second shot that was missed on purpose to try to give the Warriors a chance to tie was rebounded by Scinta. Scinta made one of two free throws on his end. With 0.9 seconds left, Garrett went to the line but missed the first and the second attempt was grabbed by Gump, allowing Centre to escape with three-point victory.

For the game, the Warriors shot 48.2 percent (27-of-56) from the field, their second-best shooting performance of the season. They also went 10-of-24 from three-point territory and 10-of-17 at the line. The Colonels shot 40 percent (26-of-65) from the field, 10-of-27 from outside and 15-of-18 at the line. Hendrix held a 33-32 edge in rebounds.

- Smith led the Warriors with 19 points and a season-high eight assists. He also had two steals.
- Forward John Ogle scored 18 points.
- Garrett connected on four three-pointers for 13 points and dished out three assists.
- Freshman forward Bryce Batchelor scored six points off the bench.
- Senior guard Drew Nikolovski scored four points and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds.

Centre Notes
- Scinta finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks.
- Tucker Sine hit four three-pointers for 16 points.
- Tyler Wesley had 14 points, nine boards and a pair of blocks.
- Jarod Griffin finished with 12 points and four assists.
- Matt Gump recorded eight points, four boards, six assists and three steals.
