MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Despite graduate student forward
John Ogle scoring a career-high 24 points, the Hendrix College men's basketball team lost to Rhodes College 66-60 Saturday evening at Mallory Gymnasium in Southern Athletic Association play.
The Warriors (1-14, 0-4) had a 29-17 lead with 4:46 to play in the first half, but the host Lynx (8-7, 2-2) finished the period with a 9-2 run to make the game 31-36 at halftime in Hendrix' favor.
The Orange & Black pushed their lead to 35-28 with 18:04 to play, but Rhodes pulled ahead with a 17-0 run to take a 45-35 lead at the 13:25 mark. The Warriors would answered with an 11-1 rally to tie it up at 46 each with 9:30 to play. From there, the combatants would tie it again five more times and it was knotted at 60-60 with 1:59 to play.
A lay-up by Daniel Darst put the Rhodes up by two at the 1:45 mark. A pair of missed buckets and turnover by the Warriors gave the Lynx the ball back with under 30 seconds to play. Brennan Sullivan would make four free throw attempts for Rhodes in the final 24 seconds to secure the win.
Hendrix started off on fire, shooting 61.9 percent (13-of-21) in the first half. They cooled down to 37 percent (10-of-27) in the second period and were at 47.9 percent (23-of-48) for the contest. They were also 3-of-16 from three-point range and 11-of-14 at the line. Rhodes shot 40.4 percent (19-of-47) from the field, 6-of-17 from outside and 22-of-31 at the free throw line. The Lynx had a 34-27 rebound advantage.
Hendrix Notes- Ogle also tied his career-high with three steals and picked up four rebounds. He was 8-of-16 from the field and 8-of-9 at the stripe.
- Senior guard
Drew Nikolovski came up with 12 points for his third double-digit scoring performance of the season.
- Junior guard
Travis Garrett made a pair of three-pointers off the bench en route to eight points. He also added three assists and two steals.
- Freshman point guard
Preston Smith finished with five points and four assists.
- Junior center
Gearen Littlefield led the Warriors with six rebounds.
Rhodes Noes- Daniel Galvin scored a career-high 28 points on 11-of-14 shooting and had five rebounds.
- Sullivan finished with 21 points and seven boards. He went 10-of-12 at the free throw line.
- Tyler Gee had six points, 11 boards and five assists.
Up NextHendrix will continue with league play when they host Berry College Friday night at Grove Gymnasium.
