Hendrix Falls to UT Dallas in Slugfest

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - The Hendrix College baseball lost their final game of the Rusty Greer Collegiate Classic to the University of Texas at Dallas 15-9 in offensive battle Sunday evening.

The Comets (3-0) outhit the Warriors (0-3) 18-12. UTD opened the game with five runs in the top of the first. David McKenzie had a two-run double and Nolan Smith hit a two-run inside-the-park home run for the Comets.

Hendrix answered with five runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Jake Wiegand walked, followed by a Drew Judson bunt hit and Wyatt Hogan reaching on an error to load the bases with no outs. Sophomore center fielder JR McAuley ripped a double down the the left field line, plating Wiegand and Judson. After the first out, freshman shortstop Tanner Cooper followed with a bases-clearing hit up the middle. Sophomore catcher Justin Robison singled to right, which was misplayed, allowing Cooper to score the tying run.

UTD regained the lead with a run in the second, followed by another one in the third. The Warriors tied it up again in the bottom of the fifth when Hogan singled and McAuley doubled, setting up a two-run hit from Robison.

The Comets took the lead for good with a five-run sixth inning on four hits and four walks. Hendrix made it 12-8 in the sixth when freshman Marshall Nichol led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Hogan. UTD posted three more runs in the eighth to go up 15-8.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, McAuley hit his third double of the game. After another out, Cooper was hit by a pitch and Robison walked to load the bases. Freshman Jorge Leon came up with a pinch hit single to center, plating McAuley. The Warriors grounded out to end the game.

Hendrix Notes
- Freshman Josh Slezak took the loss in relief. He allowed three runs, three walks and a hit while striking out five over 3.1 innings.
- McAuley's three doubles were tied for the second most in school history. He also crossed the plate three times and drove in a pair.
- Robison was 2-for-4 at the plate with two driven in. He also threw out three runners from behind the plate, tied for second most in school history.
- Judson and Nichol each recorded two hits.
- Hogan recorded a sac bunt, sac fly, single and scored twice.

UT Dallas Notes
- Smith went 4-for-4 with four driven in, two runs scored and the home run.
- McKenzie had three hits, including two doubles, three runs scored and three RBI.
- Center fielder Josh Covey also had three hits and scored twice.
- Starter Jonathan May (1-0) earned the win. He gave up eight hits, six earned runs, two walks and struck out three over five innings.

Hendrix will take on the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Ark. Tuesday afternoon.
