MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Hendrix College baseball team took the Southern Athletic Association series from #22 Berry College with a 12-6 win Saturday.
The Warriors (9-9, 4-2) outhit the Vikings (15-6, 3-3) 21-11. The 21 hits were tied for the fourth most in school history.
Berry took a 1-0 lead in the first when pitcher Ben Jernigan doubled in shortstop Alfred Francis. They added two more in the second on a sacrifice fly by Greg Keel and a base hit by Dusty Tyson.
Hendrix tied it up in the third on a two-run double from freshman shortstop
Tanner Cooper and a RBI single from sophomore right fielder
Matthew Lillard.
The Warriors sent 11 batters to the plate in the fourth and recorded five runs on seven hits. Freshman third baseman
Jorge Leon had a two-run double and junior left fielder
Wyatt Hogan knocked in a run on single. Lillard and sophomore center fielder
JR McAuley also had run-scoring hits in the frame.
Hendrix went up 10-3 in the fifth when sophomore first baseman
Jake Wiegand led off with a double and Leon hit a one-out single. Sophomore second baseman
Drew Judson singled down the left field line, scoring Wiegand. Cooper plated Leon with a sac fly to right field.
The Warriors tacked on two more in the sixth on run-scoring singles by Leon and Judson.
Berry added a run each in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.
Hendrix Notes- With the win, the Warriors move to 4-3 against ranked teams this season.
- Hendrix has won all four series, including two in conference, they've played this year.
- Junior starter
Harley Faye (3-1) earned the win by allowing eight hits, three earned runs and struck out three over eight innings.
- Leon tied the school record with five hits and had a double, three runs scored and three RBI. He is the 11th Warrior to record five hits in a game.
- Cooper extended his hitting streak to 14 games, which is tied for the ninth longest in school history. He went 4-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored.
- Judson went 3-for-6 with two knocked in. It was Judson's 10th multiple-hit game of the season.
- Wiegand had a pair of hits, including a double, scored thre etimes and walked once.
- McAuley also had two hits and a RBI.
Berry Notes- Jernigan (2-2) took the loss, allowing 10 hits and five earned runs over 3.1 innings.
- Third baseman Devin Post went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a double, a triple and a RBI.
Up NextHendrix will return home to face the University of Texas at Dallas on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
