SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Hendrix College baseball team opened their Southern Athletic Association series at Sewanee - The University of the South 3-2 on Friday afternoon.
The Warriors (13-11, 7-3) scored a pair of runs in the top of the first. Freshman third baseman
Jorge Leon led off with a walk and junior left fielder
Wyatt Hogan doubled, moving Leon to third. Leon crossed the plate on a wild pitch, then freshman shortstop
Tanner Cooper drew a walk. Cooper was caught stealing at second, but Hogan took advantage of the throw and scored from third.
Hendrix tacked on another run in the third when Cooper singled and scored on a double by sophomore center fielder
JR McAuley. Sophomore
Matthew Lillard singled before McAuley's double, but was thrown out at home on the play.
The Tigers (3-23, 2-8) scored in the bottom of the third when Beau Allen led off with a walk and later scored after an error on a Trey Akins fly ball.
Sewanee had a chance to tie it in the bottom of the ninth. Right fielder Tony Dykes led off the frame off by drawing a walk and moved to second on a passed ball. After a ground out moved to Dykes to third, he scored on a Kyle Schnell sacrifice fly to make the game 3-2 with two outs. Josh Roberts followed with a walk and stole second. Shortstop Trey Akins followed with a single and Roberts, the tying run, was thrown out at home by Warrior right fielder
Marshall Nichol to end the game.
Junior starting pitcher
Harley Faye (4-1) earned the win with a career-high eight strikeouts and allowing eight hits, an unearned run and two walks over eight innings. Freshman
Taylor Barker earned his fourth save of the year by throwing the ninth.
Lucas DeSantis (0-1) lasted just two-thirds of an inning, allowing a hit, two runs and four walks for Sewanee.
Hendrix Notes- Along with his heroic defensive play, Nichol extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single.
- Hogan went 2-for-5 with a run scored and a double.
- Cooper went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two walks.
- McAuley recorded his seventh double of the year.
Sewanee Notes- Roberts went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases.
- Catcher Ryan Poole also had two hits.
- First baseman Drew Mancuso hit a double.
Up NextHendrix and Sewanee will wrap up the series with a double-header at noon Saturday.
