Hendrix Tops Sewanee to Open Series

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Hendrix College baseball team opened their Southern Athletic Association series at Sewanee - The University of the South 3-2 on Friday afternoon.

The Warriors (13-11, 7-3) scored a pair of runs in the top of the first. Freshman third baseman Jorge Leon led off with a walk and junior left fielder Wyatt Hogan doubled, moving Leon to third. Leon crossed the plate on a wild pitch, then freshman shortstop Tanner Cooper drew a walk. Cooper was caught stealing at second, but Hogan took advantage of the throw and scored from third.

The Tigers (3-23, 2-8) scored in the bottom of the third when Beau Allen led off with a walk and later scored after an error on a Trey Akins fly ball.

Sewanee had a chance to tie it in the bottom of the ninth. Right fielder Tony Dykes led off the frame off by drawing a walk and moved to second on a passed ball. After a ground out moved to Dykes to third, he scored on a Kyle Schnell sacrifice fly to make the game 3-2 with two outs. Josh Roberts followed with a walk and stole second. Shortstop Trey Akins followed with a single and Roberts, the tying run, was thrown out at home by Warrior right fielder Marshall Nichol to end the game.
