Hendrix Sweeps Sewanee, Ties for 1st in SAA

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Hendrix College baseball team completed the Southern Athletic Association sweep at Sewanee - The University of the South on Saturday by winning 6-3 and 6-4 in a double-header.

With the two wins, the Warriors improve to 15-11 overall and 9-3 in the SAA, tying with #3 Birmingham-Southern College for first place.

In game one, Hendrix put up a run in each of the first two innings. Junior second baseman Drew Judson and junior Wyatt Hogan hit back-to-back singles in the first, then both moved into scoring position on a Tanner Cooper ground ball. Judson scored on a Justin Robison ground out. In the second, sophomore center fielder JR McAuley led off with a triple and scored on a Jorge Leon sacrifice fly.

The Tigers (3-25, 2-10) took a 3-2 lead in the fourth on a Trey Akins RBI-triple and a pair of sacrifice flies. Hendrix tied it back up in the fifth when Judson led off with a double and scored on an error after a Hogan single to right field.

The Warriors pulled back ahead in the sixth when Leon was hit by a pitch with two outs and scored on a Judson double. Hendrix added two more runs in the eighth. With two outs Judson reaches on a base hit, steals second, then Hogan follows with a walk. Cooper plates them both on a double.

Senior Daniel Imbro threw his fourth complete game of the season to go move his record to 4-3. He allowed three runs, two hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Drew Mancuso (1-4) took the loss for the Tigers. He gave up nine hits, four runs and a walk with six strikeouts over six innings.

- Judson went 4-for-5 with three runs scored, two doubles, a RBI and a stolen base.
- Hogan was 3-for-4 with a run scored and a double.
- Robison finished with two hits as well.
- Cooper recorded a double.
- Dylan Bowers and Marshall Nichol each stole their first bases of the year.

Sewanee Game 1 Notes
- Akins finished with two hits, a run, a RBI and a triple.
- Jackson Cooper and Ryan Poole each recorded a sacrifice fly.

In game two, Hendrix led 1-0 in the top of the third when Judson singled, moved to second on a Hogan base knock and scored on a Cooper hit. Sewanee tied it up in the bottom of the frame when Beau Allen led off with a single and later scored from third on a wild pitch.

The Tigers took the lead in the fourth when Cooper singled, stole second and moved to third on throwing error on the steal attempt. He then scored on a wild pitch. They went up 4-1 on a two-run triple by Akins in the bottom of the fifth.

The Warriors won the game in the top of the seventh with four runs. Junior third baseman Spencer Summers led off with a walk followed by a double by Nichol. Leon drove in Summers with a base hit. After a ground out, Hogan reach first on an error, but was able to knock in Nichol to make the game 4-3. Leon tied it up on a passed ball, then freshman Josh Walker drew a walk to put two runners on. A Matthew Lillard ground ball moved Hogan and Bowers, who pinch ran for Walker, into scoring position. Robison came threw with a two-run single to give Hendrix the 6-3 lead.

Senior starter Will Nichol (3-2) threw all seven innings and tied his career-high of eight strikeouts while allowing three hits, three earned runs and three walks. J.T. Hintzen (1-5) took the loss, giving up nine hits, three earned runs and two walks with seven strikeouts.

Hendrix Game 2 Notes
- Leon went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored at the top of the order.
- Robison was also 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in.
- Marshall Nichol extended his hitting streak to nine games with his double.

Sewanee Game 2 Notes
- Akins had the Tigers' only extra base hit with the two-run triple.
- Jackson Cooper and Beau Allen each stole a base.
- Allen also scored twice.

Hendrix will host NCAA Division II in-state foe Ouachita Baptist University Tuesday night.
