CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College baseball team won both games of a double-header against North Park University at Warrior Field on Saturday.
The Warriors (6-8) won the first game 7-0, then took the nightcap from the Vikings (1-4) 8-6.
In game one, Hendrix senior
Daniel Imbro needed only 90 pitches for a one-hit complete game shutout, the first of his career. He struck out two to move his record to 2-2 on the year.
Hendrix broke open a scoreless game in the fourth with three runs. Freshman
Jorge Leon singled to lead off the frame and sophomore
Drew Judson doubled to move both runners into scoring position. Junior left fielder
Wyatt Hogan followed with a walk, then sophomore catcher
Justin Robison drew a bases loaded walk, plating Leon. Sophomore right fielder
Matthew Lillard hit a sacrifice fly to center, allowing Judson to score. Junior
Harley Faye grounded out, but drove in Hogan.
In the fifth, freshman center fielder
Marshall Nichol led off with a triple and Leon knocked him in with an infield single. A balk and a Judson sac bunt moved to Leon to third. Hogan doubled Leon in to make the game 5-0. Hogan drove in Nichol in the seventh and sophomore first baseman
Jake Wiegand hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth that scored Lillard in the eighth.
The Warriors had 11 hits in game one. Brent Kessinger (0-3) allowed nine hits, six runs, two walks and struck out six over 6.2 innings in the loss.
In game two, Hendrix scored in the first when Leon led off with a walk and later scored from third on a Lillard ground out. North Park scored two runs in the fourth, the home team answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-2. Freshman
Josh Walker led off with a walk and Wiegand doubled, putting two runners in scoring position. Nichol knocked them both in with a single up the middle. With two outs and the bases empty, Leon and Judson drew back-to-back walks and Hogan was hit to load the bases. Freshman shortstop
Tanner Cooper extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single to right, Leon and Judson. Lillard followed with a base hit to plate Hogan.
Viking third baseman Tyler Woolbright hit a three-run double in the fifth to make the game 6-5. North Park tied it in the sixth. Hendrix took the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth. Judson led off with a single and Hogan walked. After a wild pitch and an intentional pass issued to Cooper, Lillard knocked in Judson on a sac fly which proved to be the winning run. Walker was intentionally walked to load the bases again and Wiegand drove in Hogan with another sacrifice fly for the insurance run.
Left-handed reliever
Cannon Schrank (1-0) picked up his first win of the year, allowing four hits, a run and a walk and striking out two over three innings. Freshman Taylor Baker earned his third save of the season with a strikeout in a perfect ninth inning. Ryne Sack (0-1) took the loss for NPU.
Hendrix Notes- Leon went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the opener. Leon walked three times and scored twice in game two.
- Judson hit two doubles in game one. He scored twice in game two.
- Hogan was 2-for-3 with two RBI in the first game. He scored twice in the nightcap.
- Nichol had two hits and scored twice in the opener. Nichol drove in two in the second game.
- Cooper has a season-best 10-game hit streak. He went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two walks in game two.
- Wiegand was 3-for-4 with a double and a RBI in the second game.
- Junior catcher
James Martin recorded his first hit of the season in the nightcap.
North Park Notes- Jacob Woolsey recorded the only hit for the Vikings in game one.
- Ray Cekus went 3-for-5 with two runs scored in game two, as did first baseman Anthony Bragg.
- Woolbright drove in four runs in the second game.
- Shortstop Nate Simons was 3-for-4 in the nightcap.
Up NextHendrix and North Park will play the final game of the series on Sunday at noon.
