CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College baseball team finished off the three-game series sweep of North Park University with an 11-5 win at Warrior Field Sunday afternoon.
The Warriors (7-8) outhit the Vikings (1-5) and took advantage of 11 walks issued by North Park, tied for the fourth most in school history.
In the bottom of the first, freshman third baseman
Jorge Leon led off with an infield single and later scored on a sacrifice fly from freshman shortstop
Tanner Cooper. Hendrix went up 2-0 in the second after a leadoff double by sophomore catcher
Justin Robison. After loading the bases, Robison scored on a double-play ground ball.
Cooper extended his hitting streak to 11 games with base hit in the third, then stole second. He scored on another Robison double to go up 3-0. Sophomore first baseman
Jake Wiegand started the fourth off with a single and scored on a Leon triple. Sophomore second baseman
Drew Judson drove in Leon with a sac fly. to make the game 5-0.
North Park got on the board in the sixth on a RBI-single from designated hitter Tyler Woolbright. Judson led the bottom of the frame off with a home run to left field, his second of the season.
After another run in the seventh for the Vikings, the Warriors exploded for five runs on four hits, two walks and a sac fly. Hendrix sent 10 batters up to the plate in the seventh.
North Park managed three runs in the ninth to make the final score 11-5.
Freshman
Taylor Barker (1-0), making his first collegiate start, earned the win by allowing six hits, one run and a walk with three strikeouts over 5.2 innings. Senior
Kyle Teachout threw a scoreless eighth inning.
Jason Meger (0-1) allowed six hits, three runs and two walks with a strikeout over three innings to take the loss.
Hendrix Notes- The Warriors tied the school record with four sacrifice flies on the day.
- Leon went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two driven in and a walk.
- Judson was also 3-for-4 with two runs scored, the home run and three RBI.
- Cooper stole two bases on the day.
- Robison was 3-for-4 as well and drove in two with his pair of doubles. He also recorded his 11th caught stealing of the season.
- Wiegand went 2-for-2 with two walks, a double and two runs scored.
North Park Notes- Caleb Layden, Ray Cekus and Nate Simons each had two hits.
- Woolbright recorded two RBI.
- Simons, Anthony Bragg and Mithcell Jordan each recorded a triple.
Up NextHendrix will travel to Mount Berry, Ga. for a Southern Athletic Association series at Berry College beginning Saturday.
