CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College women's soccer team opened the 2016 season with a 2-1 defeat over #22 University of Texas at Tyler at Warrior Field Friday night.
Despite being outshot 27-5 overall and 10-4 on goal, the Warriors earned their first win over a ranked team under third-year head coach
Jeff Trimble.
Hendrix struck early when sophomore forward
Evie Cannon drew the ball into the right corner, then connect with sophomore
Macie Stultz on a cross, who knocked it into the back of the net just 2:09 into the game.
The Patriots tied up the game in the 40th minute when Brittany Matthews scored after shaking off the Hendrix defense on the right side and found the net uncontested.
The Warriors regained the lead in the 51st minute when sophomore defender
Melissa Miller booted a free kick from midfield and senior
Sydney Meyer headed in the goal off the crossbar.
Hendrix managed to hold off UTT's attack for the rest of the game, with junior
Jordan Rausch making three saves in the final 33 minutes.
Hendrix Notes
- The win was the first for Hendrix over UT Tyler since 2003. The Patriots had won the previous five meetings.
- Stultz' goal was the first of her career.
- Rausch finished the game with nine saves total.
- Miller's assist was the fourth of her career
- Cannon posted the fifth assist in her tenure.
- Meyer now has three goals in her career, two of which are game-winners.
UT Tyler Notes
- The Patriots recorded nine corner kicks while the Warriors had none.
- Matthews took 11 shots, four on goal.
- Vanessa Rangel took six shots, one on goal.
- Emily Hurley recorded two saves in the second half.
