Jackson, MI - The Hendrix Warriors traveled to face the Majors of Millsaps College on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors took hold of the match early, and used a phenomenal balance of offense and defense to come away victorious; defeating Millsaps 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 26-24).
The Warriors came out in set number one firing on all cylinders. An ace by
Lauren Dwyer helped HC jump out to a 10-9 lead. The Majors were able to claw back and tie it at 10-10 however, the Warriors capped a 8-1 run with a monster kill by
Lauren Petrisin to bring the score to 18-11.
The Majors were only able to muster another seven points, as the Warriors defense smothered Millsap's attack, holding them to an attacking percentage of .175. Hendrix would take the set 25-18.
Set number two was a battle, as neither team let the other run away early. After staying within reach for much of the second set, the Warriors were able to pull away with a 25-23 set two win.
Set number three began as a carbon copy of set two, with both teams trading shots and staying within reach of one another. However, kills by
Kiersten Huitt,
Hannah Tackett, and Petrisin jump started a quick 7-0 run as the Warriors went up 17-10. That small scoring burst proved to be the turning point of set number three, as Hendrix would come away with a 26-24 win in the third set and take the 3-0 match win.
Petrisin led the Warriors with 14 kills, while Dwyer was not far behind with 12 of her own.
Amber Melcher added to her career assists total, dishing out 27 assists in the win; and freshmanÂ
Jeanette McGrath paced the team with 26 digs as Hendrix improved their record to 10-14 overall, and 7-6 in the SAA.
