St. Louis, MO - The Hendrix volleyball team competed in the Washington University Baden Invite today. Their first opponent for the day was the #10 ranked Big Blue of Millikin University. Coming into play Hendrix had a record of 11-15 overall after a loss to a tough Emory team on Sunday afternoon.Â
It was Millikin who got on top early in set number one, taking a quick 8-7 lead. Hendrix regrouped and crawled their way back remaining just a few points away for most of the rest of the game. The Big Blue would put their foot on the gas at the end and take the set 25-19.
Despite the second set starting with the teams knotted up at 4, the Big Blue ran away with it surrendering just 13 points to take set two 25-17.Â
The Big Blue proved to be too much for the Warriors and they took the match in straight sets with a 25-20 win in the third set. Hendrix was led by
Lauren Petrisin with eight kills and
Bradi Ryan with seven.
The Warriors volleyball team would next take on the host the # 12 ranked Washington. In what proved to be a battle, Hendrix was able to come out on top by a score of 3-1 (27-25, 25-22, 24-26, 25-22).
After Hendrix claimed the first set 27-25, the Warriors would continue to push hard. A quick 10-8 lead by Hendrix forced the Bears to panic. Hendrix was able to grow their lead to five at 15-10Â and keep control to take set number two 25-22.
Set number three went the Bears way after they battled back from an 11-4 deficit early on. Washington had chipped away at Hendrix's lead, and eventually won a the set 26-24.
One set away from a win, the Warriors turned the intensity up a notch. After coming out strong in the fourth set, Hendrix cruised to a 25-22 set four victory and a 3-1 game win.
Offensively, Petrisin led Hendrix with 16 kills, while junior
Amber Melcher added an incredible 28 assists. Defensively three Warriors earned double-digit digs, including freshman
Jeanette McGrath who led the Warriors with 25. Sophomore
Kiersten Huitt paced Hendrix with seven total blocks, while Ryan and Petrisin each chipped in six and four blocks respectively.
The win improves the Warriors to 12-16 overall. Hendrix will hit the court next on Friday, November 3rd for a huge matchup against Centre in the first round of the SAA Conference Tournament.
