Warriors Come Out on Top in Battle With Eagles

Clarksville, AR - The Hendrix College women's basketball team traveled to Clarksville as they began their regular season schedule. Their first test was a non-conference match-up against the Eagles of Ozarks.

The Warriors opened up play scoring the first points of the game as a result of a Madison Martin layup. Ozarks quickly responded and the first quarter would soon become a back and forth affair. The quarter ended with the Eagles on top 18-14 in a high intensity first frame.

Hendrix responded in the second quarter starting it with a 14-9 run to take a one-point lead. The lead would stick as Hendrix found themselves on top at halftime 32-31.

Martin was the catalyst for the Warriors offense connecting on 4 of 5 field goal attempts to give her eight points in the half. She was supported by Leah Smith and Heather Prowse with five and four points respectively.

The second half carried the same theme as the first, a back and forth affair that saw neither team could pull ahead.  After three quarters of play the Warriors held a slim 48-47 lead, heading into the final ten minutes.

All tied up with seven minutes to go into the game the Warriors turned up the heat and went on a 22-13 run to take the game 74-65 and earn their first win of the season.

"Any road win is a good win and I am really proud of our group," said Head Coach Drew Gaeng. "I thought we played hard and made some big plays in big spots. We have a lot to improve but tonight was a great effort."

A huge second half from Martin carried Hendrix to the victory. Martin put up a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Smith continued her incredible day with 17 points on 7-12 shooting to fuel the Warriors offense.

The win puts Hendrix at 1-0 going into their next match against Austin College on Saturday, November 18th. Tip-off is set for 3:00 pm.
