HC Falls in Non-Conference Match-Up

Sherman, TX - The Hendrix Warriors men's basketball team came into this non-conference match-up with confidence following a heart breaker one-point loss just a few days prior. For their second match of the season the Warriors faced the Roo's of Austin. Hendrix weathered the storm early and came out firing; however, the hot shooting of the Roo's was just too much to overcome as the Warriors fell to Austin 91-83.

While the home team shot the ball very well, the Warriors came out strong as well early on. Junior Michael Calamese opened the scoring for HC as sophomore Austin Moore added a lay-up of his own to give Hendrix a 16-15 lead at the 12:27 mark of the first half.

Kam Brasfield was the leading scorer for the Warriors in the opening frame, dropping 14 of his 19 total points in the first half.

The momentum slowly started to shift the way of the Roo's however, as Austin turned their one point deficit into a eight point lead with just over seven minutes remaining in the half. A three-pointer by Brasfield would close out the opening 20 minutes giving the Warriors an eleven point deficit going into the locker room.

The Warriors 59.3% field goal shooting was the key in the first half. The Roo's held the advantage in fast break points 10-4.

While it was Austin that came out with a bang in the first half, Hendrix came out just as red hot in the beginning of the second half. A game that had been played back-and-forth throughout the opening frame quickly looked to be getting away from AC as the Warriors took a two point lead with 12:24 left.

Back-to-back buckets in the lane for Austin would help them to regain a three point lead with 6 minutes left in the game.

A Roo's jumper increased their lead back to eight, and then a free-throw made it nine with 1:50 to go.

The Roo's didn't allow the Warriors to make a run as Hendrix would ultimately fall 91-83.

"This was a game of possessions," said Head Coach Thad McCracken. "Unfortunately, we turned the ball over too many times and spotted them 17 more shot attempts. I felt like we came out flat in the first half but picked up energy and intensity in the second half. We were able to take the lead for a little bit later in the game so I'm proud of how the guys responded tonight, but we just have to put it together for 40 minutes now."

Marcis Hall was nothing short of dominant in the second half. Dropping 13 of his game high 20 points in the final frame. He finished the night going 9-11 from the field with ten rebounds and a block.

Brasfield finished the game with 19 points, two rebounds, four assists, and a steal.

The loss gives HC a record of 0-2. They will face next Centenary on Sunday. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
