Sherman, TX -Â The Hendrix College men's basketball team traveled to Texas on Sunday afternoon to take on the Gents of Centenary, in a non-conference match-up. The first half was extremely tight, keeping both sides within striking distance. However, a fast starting second half by the Gents helped Centenary take control and defeat the Warriors 81-70.
The Gents played very well in the opening parts of the first half, growing their lead to as many as ten in the middle stage of the first 20 minutes. However the Warriors showed why they are a tough team, turning that double digit deficit into a two point lead in less than four minutes.
It all started with a
Marcis Hall lay-up, which was quickly followed with a
Kam Brasfield jumper. A
Trey Rouse three-pointer at the 5:42 mark quickly cut the Centenary lead in half, and then another three by Brasfield kept the momentum going. Down just three,
Sean Criswell kept the ball rolling when got a lay-up and cut the Centenary lead to just one.
Sophomore
Austin Moore nailed a three-pointer to put Hendrix up 37-35; their first lead of the game since it was 7-6.
Hendrix entered the locker rooms at half up one.
Unfortunately for the Warriors, that momentum wouldn't carry over to the opening minutes of the second half. The Gents went on a run of their own, ballooning the lead to as many as 16. However, the Warriors left everything they had out on the court before the final buzzer.
With just over ten minutes remaining, the Warriors mounted another push as they had in the first half. A three-pointer from
Jack Eaton got things started and then a jumper by Eaton got the Hendrix bench rocking, cutting the lead to nine.
Unfortunately the Gents were just too much for the Warriors down the stretch.
"I'm incredibly proud of our teams fight this afternoon," said Head Coach
Thad McCracken. "Centenary came out and made a lot of perimeter jump shots to start the game and our guys just kept playing and stuck with the game plan. We were able to make a nice run to close out the first half but lost some of our energy and intensity to start the second half. We need to find a way to maintain our momentum and intensity through the entirety of the game. Even after their big run to start the second half we continued to fight and never quit. We will continue to get better and I'm looking forward to our next game."
Criswell and Hall led the way for Hendrix, each scoring 17 and 15 points respectively. Brasfield added 13 of his own, while Rouse chipped in with eight. Five different Warriors recorded at least one assist with
Michael Calamese leading the way with four.
In total, ten different players found the score sheet on Sunday afternoon as the Warriors fell to 0-3 on the young season. Hendrix will come home on Tuesday when they host The University of Dallas for a 7:30 pm night-cap.
