Baseball Completes Weekend Home Split

CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College baseball team split a pair of games at home over the weekend. The Warriors (1-4) defeated North Park University 8-6 on Saturday, then fell to Spalding University 7-5 on Sunday.

Against the Vikings (0-2) on Saturday, the Warriors put up a three-spot in the bottom of the first. Junior second baseman Drew Judson singled, then senior left fielder Wyatt Hogan reached on an error. After a double steal, sophomore designated hitter Josh Walker doubled in Judson for the first run. Junior right fielder Matthew Lillard followed with a grounder, plating Hogan and sophomore shortstop Tanner Cooper scored Walker on an infield single.

NPU tied the game with three runs in the top of the second. Designated hitter Tyler Woolbright and catcher Greg Grana both had RBI-doubles in the frame.

The Warriors regained a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth when Lillard hit a two-run single, scoring Hogan and sophomore third baseman Jorge Leon. The Vikings went up 6-5 in the top of the seventh with three runs on three hits and an error. Third baseman Seth Dvorak had a two-run single.

Hendrix took the lead for good with a three-run seventh. Sophomore catcher Justin Robison and junior Jake Wiegand both drew walks to start the inning. Junior center field JR McAuley bunted them into scoring position and Leon doubled in Robison. Judson followed with a two-run single.

Warrior freshman Evan Orren (1-0) earned the win by allowing a hit and a walk in two and two-thirds scoreless innings of relief. Alex Vannucci (0-1) took the loss.

- Leon went 2-for-5 with two runs and a double.
- Judson was 2-for-3 with two RBI, two walks, a run scored and three steals.
- Lillard knocked in three runs.
- Cooper stole two bases.

North Park Notes
- Shortstop Charles Robin went 2-for-3 with two walks.
- Grana recorded two hits, including a double.

On Sunday, the Golden Eagles (2-1) went up 4-0 with two runs in the first and one each in the second and third. The Warriors picked up a run in the bottom of the third when Leon doubled and scored on a Judson single down the left field line.

They cut the deficit to 4-2 in the fourth when Robison led off with a walk and later scored on a ground ball off of McAuley's bat.

Spalding added two more runs in the sixth to take a 6-2 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, the Warriors made the game 6-5 with three runs on three hits. With one out, Leon walk and stole second, then scored on a Judson hit up the middle. Freshman left fielder Sean Dehne singled, moving Judson to second. Walker then singled to left center, plating Judson. After a strikeout, Walker stole second and Robison drew a walk to load the bases. Senior third baseman Spencer Summers was hit by a pitch, scoring Dehne.

The Golden Eagles added another run when catcher Dillon Sievert led off the top of the eighth with a solo homer.

The Warriors loaded the bases with one one out in the ninth, but the game ended when Leon lined into a double play with a rocket hit right at second baseman CJ Phillips.

Kyle Olliges (1-0) earned the win for SU, allowing five hits, four runs, four walks and five strikeouts over 6.1 innings. Matt Harper picked up the save. Sophomore Colin Brown (0-1) took the loss for the Warriors, allowing three hits, three earned runs, six walks and four strikeouts over 2.2 frames.

- Leon went 2-for-5 with two runs, a double, a walk and a stolen base.
- Judson expanded his hitting streak to 13 games with two hits and two RBI.
- Walker also had two hits and stole a base.
- Robison drew three walks and scored a run.

Spalding Notes
- Sievert went 4-for-5 with two runs, three RBI, a double, a homer and a steal.
- Center fielder Jeff Thompson had two hits.
- Left fielder Jacob Woodruff scored twice and stole a pair of bases.
- Right fielder Nic Chafin also had two hits, including a double.
