Warriors Take Pair of One-Run Games from Vikings

CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College baseball team won both games of a Southern Athletic Association double-header by one run over Berry College at Warrior Field on Saturday. The Warriors (3-8, 2-0) defeated the Vikings (7-6, 0-2) 8-7 with a walk-off hit in the opener, then won 4-3 in a seven-inning contest in the nightcap.

Hendrix took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second in game one. Sophomore catcher Justin Robison and junior designated hitter Jake Wiegand led off with back-to-back walks. Sophomore second baseman Tanner Cooper singled in Robison and junior right fielder Matthew Lillard doubled to right field, plating Wiegand. Freshman left fielder Sean Dehne knocked in Cooper with a grounder.

The Warriors expanded their advantage to 5-0 with a two-run single to center by Lillard.

Berry made it 5-3 in the top of the fourth on a three-run homer to left center by first baseman Kris Patel. The added another run in the fourth a RBI-single by shortstop Alfred Francis.

The game remained 5-4 until the top of the ninth. Second baseman Slade Dale hit a sac fly, right fielder Casey Whitaker had a RBI-single and Francis scored on a balk to give Berry a 7-5 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, Dehne was hit by a pitch and sophomore third baseman Dylan Bowers walked to start the frame. Sophomore shortstop Jorge Leon bunted both runners into scoring position. Junior center fielder Drew Judson followed with a two-run single to center to tie the game. Judson then stole second and Walker drew wa walk. With two outs, senior Wyatt Hogan drilled a ball into right center to drive in Judson for the walk-off victory.

Senior reliever Brain Epstein (1-0) earned the win by allowing a hit and getting an out in the top of the ninth. William Gibbons (0-2) took the loss for the Vikings.

- Lillard went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a double.
- Judson recorded two hits and stole a base with two drive in.
- Leon extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a double.
- Cooper went 2-for-3 and stole a base.
- Robison walked twice and scored twice.

- Francis went 4-for-5 with two runs scored.
- Patel drove in three runs with his home run.
- Left fielder McTier Mosley hit a pair of doubles.
- Center fielder Austin Haight scored twice.

In game two, junior starter Colin Brown (1-2) threw the seven-inning complete game, allowing seven hits, two earned runs, three walks and striking out six. Ben Coker (1-1) took the loss, giving up four hits, four runs and two walks in two innings.

Berry took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second after a hit and three errors. Hendrix answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Hogan led off with a walk, followed by a single to left by Cooper. Lillard tripled to left field, driving in both runners. Dehne then walked and stole second. Leon knocked in Lillard with a sac fly and Judson plated Dehne with a base hit to left.

The Vikings' other run came in the top of the third when Haight led off with a single, stole second and scored on a base hit by Dale.

- Judson went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a steal.
- Lillard drove in two runs with a triple.
- Robison, Hogan, Cooper and Bowers each picked up a hit.

Berry Game 2 Notes
- Haight went 2-for-4 with a stolen base.
- Francis was 2-for-2 with a walk and a double.
