MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Hendrix College baseball team opened the Southern Athletic Association Tournament with an 8-4 victory over Millsaps College Friday.
The third-seeded Warriors (20-20) move on to play second-seeded Rhodes Saturday at 11 a.m.
Hendrix outhit the Majors (18-23) 14-9 in the game.
Millsaps took a 1-0 lead in the second when Brennan Ducote walked and scored on a double from left fielder Jimmy Fondren. Hendrix tied it up in the bottom of the second when sophomore shortstop
Tanner Cooper led off with a double and later scored from third on a ground ball by junior
Jake Wiegand.
The Warriors went up 4-1 in the bottom of the third. Freshman second baseman
Sean Dehne, sophomore third baseman
Jorge Leon and junior center fielder
Drew Judson each singled to start the frame. Dehne scored on a wild pitch, followed by a sacrifice fly from senior left fielder
Wyatt Hogan which led to two runs. Cooper doubled in Judson.
First baseman Chase Callaway hit a solo home run in the fourth to make the game 4-2. The Majors tied it up in the top of the fifth, but junior right fielder
Matthew Lillard blasted a three-run homer to put Hendrix back in control at 7-4. Hendrix added a final run in the seventh when Lillard leads off with a single and scores on a base hit by sophomore first baseman
Josh Walker.
Sophomore starter
Taylor Barker (6-3) allowed six hits, four runs and three walks over five frames to get the win. Seniors
Connor Nelson and
Harley Faye each threw two scoreless innings. Jacob Mardick (8-3) gave up nine hits, seven runs, a walk and struck out one in 4.1 innings to take the loss.
Hendrix Notes
- Lillard went 2-for-5 with the three-run home run and scored twice.
- Cooper was 2-for-3 with a double, a RBI and run scored.
- Leon also had two hits, including a double, and walked twice.
